Let's take a look back at the original Golden Axe!

Golden Axe is easily one of my all-time favorite games, and as soon as I got my supergun, I knew that this was one of the first PCBs that I needed to track down. It was one of the first Genesis games that I ever played, and is still certainly in my top 5 on that system.

Fun fact: In a tradition that started when I was 15 and continues to this day, in the inter-level bits that take place at your campsite, my best friend and I would always run over to the camp fire after picking up the last potion so that our characters were standing over the flame with their legs open. Puerile, yes. But you don't mess with tradition.

Another fun fact: That's my mom playing as Tyris Flare during the 2-player portion of the arcade PCB segment. She was in town visiting for the weekend.

Thanks for watching, and please subscribe if you haven't done so already!

Sorry, not about to sign up for YouTube (too many subscriptions, usernames and passwords as it is), but great vid!

One of my all time favorite "modern" games. Fond memories playing it while working at Montgomery Ward BITD. For "demonstration" purposes only of course. And how.

Not to worry, I'll probably keep posting my new vids here as well, as long as I think they'll be interesting to folks.

One of my good friends bought his TG-16 from Montgomery Wards back in the day. Lately he's been working on a podcast where he just goes through his gaming history in detail (he's full of cool stories) and he let's me listen to them while he's still editing them so that I can give him feedback. I actually told him that he should probably briefly explain what Montgomery Wards is, because the younger crowd wasn't around when that place folded.

I worked there when the Brennan brothers were going at it. One CEO of Sears, the other of Ward's. Absolutely no connection this way at all (other than similar electronics dept. store sales experience), but went on to Sears afterwards. Game systems were divorced from home office and entertainment at Sears, so would have to walk a few extra feet to a sub-department within the children's department (Funtronics) if I wanted to see what the latest "greatest" thing was at Sears. Dreamcast kiosk was the last really "cool" thing I remember seeing in the kids' section. Shortly after the Dreamcast, Sears decided that video games belonged in the same department as TV and stereo, so got to deal with that "crap" all over again. Interesting times!

I've been subscribed for some time now and couldn't agree more. Golden Axe is one of the best ever. I really LOVE Golden Axe 2 and 3 as well. In fact, if it says "Golden Axe" on it somewhere..I LIKE IT!!

I really like the Dreamcast Smash Pack version that has different sound and the many variations that came out before that. I actually found the Master System version to be quite enjoyable and I have and play the PC Engine, PC, Amiga, Atari ST, Master System, Genesis, Mega Drive, arcade, and Dreamcast versions. Sadly, I don't have the Wonderswan color version which looks really awesome..

How do you feel about Beast Rider, the Duel, or Warrior? I enjoyed playing Warrior on emulator but have never found a physical copy, and have not played Beast Rider or the Duel.

My best friend and I both had a Genesis, and we were going to Toys R Us as often as we could to see if Golden Axe was out. IIRC Revenge of Shinobi came out a little before, my friend ended up getting that and I finally got Golden Axe when it released. It was one of those "wow" moments, and one of my favorite games of all time. We played the heck out of that.

I had the Master System version too at one point, but I'm not sure if I had it before or after I had the Genny.

The Duel is OK. It has some decent visuals, but nothing else really stands out. Music is average, gameplay is average, character designs are average, controls and gameplay system are simply average (I don't think there's much of a combo system).

Great video Jibbajaba - I always enjoy watching your videos. It's refreshing to see someone sane doing retro vg videos who doesn't seem to be doing it for money, attention or because they have an Axe to grind. I too love the hell out of Golden Axe. Bought it and Revenge of Shinobi with my Genesis at launch way back in 1989. My friend across the street and I played GA so much we could pretty much beat it without dying.

I too was wondering if you were going to bring up The Duel, Beast Rider or GA Warrior. I own all 3 and though Warrior is pretty good, I haven't given it the time it deserves. The other 2 are pretty forgettable imo. Certainly, they don't seem to be "canon" as far as the original Golden Axe goes. Here's hoping one day Sega will bring back ole Gilius and crew for some 2.5D jump-slashing, gnome-headbutting, magic-casting fun.

Thanks a lot, glazball!

I didn't bring up those games because I think of them as spin-offs, rather than a part of the main series. I guess I could have given them a quick mention, but I've been trying to tighten-up the episodes.

This game came with my Mega Drive when my family got one in the 90s. This as well as Streets of Rage I played A LOT on that multicart that came with it.

I never did play the Arcade version though.

Great game.
