New A8 Game Released - Curse of the lost Miner

Editor

For those who want to create new levels (more devious or easier), I have released slightly updated game editor. It is available at the game web page.

Please be advised that Java is required to run the editor.

Batch files for compilation

Would be there any interest in creation of batch files for compilation/assembly of the game on Windows? Currently, there are only unix-like shell scripts. Altough the scripts can be easily transformed to batch files or executed using Cygwin/MSYS, I think it might be handy to have batch files.

Even though I am not much of an artist, I have created some simple labels (color and grayscale) for the game (Floppy disk label, label for compact cassette, and 5200 cartridge label).

Download pdf from the Labels section at game home page http://www.baktra.wz.cz/software/culomin.html.

Just spent the morning playing through and finishing Curse of the Lost Miner :-D

Thanks again for creating such a good game, really challenging and so many combinations of jumping and falling that it does drive you :-o but I really enjoyed playing it

Congratulations for finishing the game and thank you for playing... It is very rewarding for me to read such comment.

And as the final screen suggests, you can always retaliate by creating even more devious caves for the game ;) .

I have decided to prepare another edition of this game. It will be a "underground madness edition" with a scoring system.

Underground Madness Rules

  1. Caves both from CaLoMin and CuLoMin, some of them horizontally reversed
  2. More lives (8)
  3. No slow mode
  4. No starting cave selection
  5. Fire button required to be pressed before the cave is entered and time counter starts (to allow the player to have some rest)
  6. No in-game music

Scoring

  1. Time - the faster a cave is completed, the better score
  2. Bonus for remaining lives after completing each cave
  3. The more of broken rocks remaining, the better score.

Thank you for developing another game baktra, looking forward to more levels....(if I ever finish the first version) :)

It should be little easier with version 1.3 available on the official home page (If you don't have it already).

The scored game will be named: "Curse of the Lost Miner - Underground madness challenge".

You can give it a try with a four-level demo I attach.

As I cannot guarantee total equivalence of the NTSC and PAL versions, the TV system name will be displayed in the title screen next to the last and high scores.

I do plan to release 5200 version too.

Full version of Curse of the Lost Miner - Underground Madness Challenge is available for download at the game home page. Who will get the highest score? Can anyone make it to the last cave with 12 lives?

Owners of 5200 - keep your fingers crossed. The source code has undergone some consolidation and simplification (fewer lines in assembler, faster cave repaint, updated text screen handling, RMT file cleanup). I intend to do the same for the 5200 version.

Scoring and other rules

  • The faster you complete a cave, the better score. You must complete a cave within PAR time which is 2,3, or 5 minutes.
  • The more broken rocks you leave, the better score. Your score also depends on the state of decay.
  • The more lives you have left, the better. Do not lose lives.
  • After completing cave 13, you are awarded 5 extra lives (maximum is 12)

I have almost forgotten to create a cassette version.

A tape image is attached. Just boot from the tape with START+OPTION. No fancy loader is provided for the sake of speed. Thanks to the Super Packer 5.6 created by Mad Team, the loading time is only 4 minutes.

This little Atari programming adventure is over (boo-hoo...). I have updated and stablized the game home page. It is simpler and has a color scheme that is in line with the (gloomy) look and feel of the game.

As a very small bonus, there are more binaries available to be downloaded directly (original segmented binaries, monolithic packed binaries, tape images, bootable disks, and cartridge images for the Atari 5200).

A nasty cheat for the original (non-U.M.C) editions of the game:

Hold SELECT (Atari 800XL), or ASTERISK (Atari 5200) until the main menu appears. You will get free access to all caves. This cheat also works with the prequel game.

It is said that the cheaters always prosper, but....there are no cheats for the U.M.C editions.

The farting noise most likely indicates load error. Unfortunately, I have no experience with APE + SIO2PCUSB + Play cassette function.

Can you please test the tape image attached? It has slightly longer inter-record-gaps (IRGs). That can help with certain timing issues.
