If it's $4/pair, I think it'd be pretty neat to have these in a homebrew release.

Small update:

Yes, I agree a box is a good idea. I should be getting some materials soon to run a few tests to make sure I can make the boxes the way I'm hoping. I've already started laying out the box art. I'm petty sure the tests will go well, but I need to make sure. Once I get the test box made, I will post pictures of it in this topic. I do have a small limitation when printing these boxes: I can not print the color "white". I don't think that will be that big of an issue, but I though I should mention it.

With that stated I do think I came up with a way to make a sliver Imagic style boxes with more consistent results. Meaning a fairly low "failure rate" (If the tests go well). We shall so see. :)

More to come...

Sounds awesome, thank you for all your hard work and effort! :)

I CAN NOT do $4.00/pair for FOIL overlays. For non foil overlays I already charge $4.00 a pair. If I sell foil overlays individually I will have to charge $4.00 EACH (not a pair). The material cost is about three times higher for foil and it takes me twice as long to make foil overlays.

Now, making sets of overlays is a little different. Since I will be make more at one time I can cut the cost a little. A set of Imagic foil overlays with limited edition Imagic style box with be $80.00 plus shipping. So if you do the math

$80.00 ÷ 24 overlays = $2.86 each (and you get a free limited edition box)

That's the best I can do.

So that comes out to $5.72/pair

Wouldn't it be 28 overlays (there are 14 Imagic games) or 30 including Wing War?

$5.72 * 14 = $80.08

Sorry, typo and I rounded up on the price slightly too:

$80.00 ÷ 28 ≈ $2.86 each

or if we want to be exact:

$80.00 ÷ 28 = $2.85714286 each  :)

As for Wing War, Has the game ever surfaced? I've seen the box, but not a game. It would be a shot in dark what the overlay functions would be.

Wing War is on the Colecovision flashback. I suspect that the Intellivision version would have played the same as far as controls goes. It seems that in the later stages (Fathom comes to mind), Imagic had developed a tendency to have the games be much more similar across platforms than the earlier titles. My hunch would be that the options to start the game would have had some presence on the overlay, as we see with several of their titles.

Pretty close to what I was thinking then. When I mentioned homebrew release, I was thinking along the lines of a 50-100+ pairs of the same overlay being made, and included with the homebrew game.

I'm intrigued, to say the least. I may have to order a sample set to see how these look in person.

When the time comes to actual sell the overlays, a box have been decided on, and the price is set, I recommend starting a fresh thread.

And, I like what Lathe26 said about a new thread. The serious collectors and non doubters will show up and purchase them!

I think the folks who know  about this stuff and want them will be there for the finished product.

The idea is growing on me.

Cons: Pricey premium for foil backed overlays that I already have and could buy originals for cheaper.

Pros: The foil backing may match the boxes better than the originals AND this is a CIB collector's item with overlays and possible a snow level (or not), and I can't pass up rare collectibles ;-) ...and Phil had a proven track record of great quality overlays. OK, I'm in ;-)

I must be missing something. Everyone seems to keep saying they can get the originals on the cheap.

Ok. I did an EBAY search for: intellivision overlays. Setting: lowest price.

I could get Beauty and the Beast and Atlantis overlays shipped for 2.00 for 2. After that the buy it now price jumps up quick to 3 and 4 or more for set. Even for common mattel overlays.

Now what is going price for Fathom overlays? I'd say 10-ish????

I challenge anyone here to pick up a set of imagic overlays for under 60.00. Either on ebay, amazon, or wherever.

Lets get proof.

I am in for 3 or 4 sets Pboland. ;-)

With some patience, orig overlays can be had reasonably priced..especially if you get them with the rest of the game and not just try to buy them alone. Many of the common Imagic games can be purchased for around $5 each CIB. A few overlay sets are pricier (Fathom, White Water, Tropical Trouble), but most aren't expensive.
