Thoughts on Traditional Tempest in T2K

So I was playing T2K last night and decided to play a few rounds of Traditional mode. I did this mainly because I'm thinking of picking it up for the 5200 soon and wanted to get a feel for it, and if i'd enjoy it nearly as much as the trippy wonderland of T2K. My questions are?

-How do people feel like it stacks up against the arcade original, in overall feel and gameplay?

-Anyone actually play Traditional mode regularly as their "go-to" tempest game, among all console versions?

-In what ways do people feel that the original arcade version is superior, or more fun?

-Would you as a traditionalist, rather play the 5200 version since it's closer to the arcade graphically?

Thanks, and looking forward to hearing what people think of this oft overlooked game mode.

I've honestly only tried it fleetingly. From what I remember about the arcade, tubes don't change as drastically as T2K Classic, if at all, and the tubes definitely don't shift in perspective as you rotate. Lack of a potentiometer becomes more apparent as well. Recently gave it a shot again during the HSC, and discovered no new feelings -- it just feels like a slightly re-tooled '2000' mode. By the by, Trav, why haven't you posted in this week's HSC, with all this apparent Tempesting? for shame!

There is a keypad button you can hit in 2k so that the tube stays stationary.

Have a 3 month old daughter, no time for HSC at the moment sadly :) Last night was my first few hours i've got to play retro in a few weeks..

Been a while since I played it, but remember feeling traditional Tempest was more like a re-tooled/stripped down version of T2K than a true arcade conversion.

If I had a 5200, I'd be willing to give it a shot I guess. Or just stick to playing it on MAME.

Not to sound blasphmous, but the Traditional mode in Tempest X3 is much more like the arcade version. I compared that to the version on Arcade's Greatest Hits (Atari edition) I rented when I first got my Playstation.

The first 16 levels are the same as the arcade unlike T2K, turning off the music to hear the same sfx from the arcade game and you press Select untill the whole web is on the screen. It's exactly like the arcade version except for the score display and the Supper Zapper Recharge voice between levels.

In that case it's remarkable that you find the time to come on here at all. I'm pretty sure when I reproduce I'll just have energy to yell at traffic and fall asleep standing up. How the Dads here do it?

Thanks for the stationary web trick -- still, though, if you're going to play the game and have it be the arcade version, you've got to be standing at a machine, have rotary controls, and have shady people standing in your peripheral -- the arcade experience. I get this when I hit the Santa Cruz arcades. And when my mother in law visits the house and I play classic mode standing around with my rotary controller. did he say it? Did he say it?
