Need help getting started with the 7800!

I would like to introduce my kids to some of the games I enjoyed as a child. I want to be able to use traditional game paddles/joystick. I suppose playing on a laptop with an emulator would be OK if it is possible to plug in game paddles. Is that possible?

What I am more inclined to do is get a 7800 from best-electronics-ca with the a/v out mod. Is this a good way to go? How good is the image on a HDTV? Are the low rez 7800 games real fuzzy?

Can I get some advice on getting an authentic game play experience with the 7800/2600 games on a modern TV/monitor? I'd rather not buy an old CRT television. I don't really have the space for that.

In my experience, paddles just don't work the same on an emulator. They always feel laggy to me. I bought a 7800 with composite out from best electronics, and it was a very nice unit. There was some ghosting, but that's just an artifact of using composite, I think.

Joystick games work fine in emulation. You can use real 2600/7800 controllers of all kinds over USB using one of these: http://home.comcast.net/~tjhafner/2600-daptor.htm

These days I play most of my joystick games on my laptop and have a 2600 hooked up for paddle games.

Paddle controlling is flatout horrible on an emulator. The game plays and feels very sloppy. I use my modded xbox For emulation. The way to go is to buy an actual 7800 system. Mine isn't av modded. But I heard great reviews about the Best Electronics AV systems. Hopefully sometime soon they place orders on the site instead of calling and emailing. The site looks like it was made in 1995.
