Cant edit my post?

Recommended Posts

You can edit posts for a short period of time initially to correct any mistakes. And in some forums (such as the Marketplace and Programming forums) you can edit your posts indefinitely. But the edit feature was abused by enough people in the past that I had to remove it beyond a certain period of time.

If you need to edit a specific post, send me a PM with a link to the post and I'd be glad to give you the ability to edit it.

You can edit, but only for a certain amount of time. So, notice your mistakes quickly. :)

I've been on sites where one could edit their posts forever. There are people in the world who can abuse darn near anything.

[EDIT: Crossed posts with Al]

Note that, as if on cue, I had a reason to make an edit...very soon after my original post. :-D

Hi Al,

I'm new to this forum, and find this time limited edit policy rather strange and inconvenient. On all the other forums I've participated in over the years they always allowed unlimited edits. You say this feature was abused, presumably by more than one person as you implied, but what do you exactly mean by that? Since it is only my posts that I can edit, how can that be abused? I don't understand. Perhaps you can enlighten me, because I've never personally seen this feature being abused (at least not that I've noticed :ponder: ).

Because of this policy, I have chosen to store all media content elsewhere for fear that if I wish to update something it'll be a hassle to do so later. Although it's kinda interesting that I am allowed to do this, since this content would in essence always be editable, and therefore possibly subject to abuse as you have suggested. Now please don't get me wrong, I'm in no way trying to dictate how this forum is run, it's just curiosity that's got me asking about this policy.

Cheers :-D

Hi Michael,

There are two ways the edit features has been abused:

1) People post something inflammatory, allow it to stand for a short while, and then edit the text to something more benign before a moderator or admin sees it. There are a few people who did this routinely.

2) People who decide they no longer want to be a part of the community and start editing away their posts. That is, they edit the post and save it with nothing in it. This has happened several times, sometimes involving many hundreds or even thousands of posts. This can be pretty disruptive to threads where this occurs, making quite a mess of them.

I am a member of quite a few forums, and the post editing policies vary quite a bit. Some don't allow me to edit posts at all. Some have a time limit. Some are indefinite. Some require that you subscribe to the forum before you can edit posts.

So, on AtariAge you can edit posts for a short period of time, which allows you to correct any immediate mistakes. Subscribers can edit posts for a longer period of time (30 days). Any Marketplace-related forums allow you to edit posts indefinitely, so you can update lists of games you have for sale, trade, etc. Programming forums also have no edit time limits, which is useful since often the first post of a topic will contain an updated binary and information about a project.

I can grant indefinite edit permissions on any specific posts if you need them.

This policy has been in place for years now, and while it can be inconvenient at times, I haven't had to deal with either of the issues above since instituting it. The limited edit window is good for fixing issues with posts, and outside of that, you can always ask for permission to edit any other posts. You are right in that media hosted outside of AtariAge could be changed, but this is something that hasn't really been abused.

Hi Albert,

Thanks for the great explanation. Wow a bit of a reality check for me, because I didn't realize people would be doing stuff like that, although I guess I should know better after being on this planet for almost 60 years. I am also fortunate that I have never seen that kind of abuse elsewhere.

I'll keep that in mind, and if it becomes a problem that I can't resolve through other means I might take you up on that. Thanks for offering to do that.

Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't occur. :) I had to write custom scripts to merge posts from database backups in a few instances to undo the damage. In the case where people were posting messages attack others and then editing them later, you'd only see stuff like that if you were in those particular threads and caught the unedited posts soon enough. The new forum software (which I will update to once they fix many things) maintains an edit history, which may allow me to remove the edit restrictions.

You're welcome. Just wanted you to know there is some rationale behind it.

Albert thanks again for taking time to explain this rationale, it is appreciated. And before I forget, thanks also for creating and maintaining such a great forum. Having been out of the Atari scene for nearly 20 years, it was both a surprise and a pleasure to stumble across it.
