thegamezmaster
I was given my nephew's Atari 2600 and games. Taking it apart there's some rust on the shielding. What's the best stuff to get to remove the rust and what can I buy to spray the shield so the rust doesn't come back? Thanks in advance for any help! fujidude
To my knowledge there are two basic methods of rust removal: mechanical and chemical. Mechanical means wire wheel, sandpaper, etc. Chemical usually means a solution which chemically removes the rust. Since, a RF shield is not a super sturdy material to begin with, you might opt for chemical solutions. There are products you can buy off the shelf, or make yourself. Once the rust is gone and the material cleaned and dried, it is time to protect it against future rust. The three ways that come immediately to mind are painting, oil type coatings, and chemical transformation of the metal's surface into one that resists corrosion, such as bluing, parkerizing, nitril crbonization (like Glocks and SA XD guns have). In your case of a RF shield, paint seems the best way, since it is not a moping or wearing part and it is easy for anyone to do. Use a quality spray primer and spray paint. Do you.know of any clear protection spray or are you painting it a color? Thanks again for helping me.

There are clear "paints" so to speak. Check your local supplier(s).
