Kaboom!: 8,330

I'll post a picture for whatever turns out to be my high score later.

Thank goodness I have a real Atari and paddles to play this. I can't imagine trying to play it on a keyboard.

They screwed up the PS2 Activision Anthology version of this; the bucket(s) move back to the middle of the playfield automatically, kind of like they're on a bungee or tether, centrally attached.

It's ideal for touch-control on an ipad but I'd agree paddles are the way to go.

LOL My digital camera is ancient so I can't connect it to the computer. (unless there is some converter I could buy) I had to use the built in camera on the computer

to take a picture of the picture.

That's 216,777 by the way. It's very hard to get a still picture.

Nice to see you here, Atarian7. The top dogs are going to have a wee bit more work to reach a top rank this week :-D .

My score is as expected: pathetic. My initial goal was to reach 5k, but after over an hour of trying, I think I might have to fry smaller fish...

Kaboom 1BB: 2,969.

So close to getting an exra bucket. Not that it would have helped me much... But I must say I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this game so far.

P.S.

Here's a good tip on how to play effectively, by Mike Matei. Kaboom starts at 15:37:

My thoughts on Kaboom!...

This has always been one of my favorite games for the Atari 2600. I can't think of a better example of pure hand/eye coordination.

Watching the above James & Mike video (posted by karokoenig), I'm glad to hear other people share my appreciation for the zen-like state one enters when playing this game.
When I'm really in the zone, I can clearly see the flame flicker on each bomb--it's very mesmerizing.

This is also one of those games that has a threshold--you can either hack the maximum speed level (like Atarian7 clearly can), or you can't (like me).

Scores are either four figures (like my 8,330), or six/seven figures (like Atarian7's 216,777). There's no middle ground.

And that 8,330 is a personal best, too.

The frustrating thing is that I can handle (the penultimate) speed level 7. But then level 8 starts, and I literally drop the bomb. I can hang on for a while if the bomber moves in a nice zig-zag pattern, but as soon as he goes all cluster-y, I'm done. I didn't have the reflexes at age 12, and I doubt I'm going to find them at 42.

That won't stop me from trying, though!
