Could the Atari 2600 handle tempest?

I remember at one of the CES shows BITD, a demo of 2600 Tempest being played. Even had a modified Indy 500 controller kit that included some lead weights and a new decal to place over the old. Hype surrounding 2600 Tempest back then was only to be outdone by Team Battlesphere several years later! Well, at least BS was released.

Do yourself a favor and buy a 5200 if you want to play an extremely faithful rendition of the arcade version.

But in response to your question, probably.

Seeing that 2 versions of Star Castle were finally programmed for the 2600, I believe that the 2600 can handle it.

The 2600 proto looked like ass. I'm still waiting for a 7800 version. I don't own a 5200 and don't want to deal with floppy control sticks. And custom digital arcade style 5200 controllers don't like Tempest very well, which expects analog.

If I had a 5200, a custom controller build would be an absolute must.
