JazGaming
I know that there was a prototype for the 2600, but could it have been any better? I know of some 2600 games in a 3d prospective.
Keatah
Yep. And with ARM support it would be even better.
MoonJammer
There is a Tempest rom for the emulators. Did you know? Not to bad and playable. Not soild in graphics as NES or even GBA. I have it on my phone and desktop computer. Dont know about using a installed graphic engine on the console.
Major_Tom_coming_home
It would be possible, but the real question is how faithful could the port be? For instance the 2600 port of Zaxxon isn't faithful at all, but IMO it's still a good game that still has the spirit of the original game. fiddlepaddle
Well, if the Atari 2600 had been designed with a socket to plug in a color Vectrex chip (once designed and available), it would have been GREAT.
+save2600
I remember at one of the CES shows BITD, a demo of 2600 Tempest being played. Even had a modified Indy 500 controller kit that included some lead weights and a new decal to place over the old. Hype surrounding 2600 Tempest back then was only to be outdone by Team Battlesphere several years later! Well, at least BS was released. Keatah
Was it the panties version? Or something that actually looked like tempest?
sloth-machine
Beam Rider and Turmoil is always how I imagined a Tempest game would work with VCS hardware.
7800
Based on some demos I've seen showing the capabilities of the 2600, I'd have to assume a really faithful version of Tempest could be achieved.
ntavio
Do yourself a favor and buy a 5200 if you want to play an extremely faithful rendition of the arcade version. But in response to your question, probably. Seeing that 2 versions of Star Castle were finally programmed for the 2600, I believe that the 2600 can handle it. Andromeda Stardust
The 2600 proto looked like ass. I'm still waiting for a 7800 version. I don't own a 5200 and don't want to deal with floppy control sticks. And custom digital arcade style 5200 controllers don't like Tempest very well, which expects analog. If I had a 5200, a custom controller build would be an absolute must. Edited June 26, 2015 by stardust4ever
7800
Maybe an old 5200 Trak Ball could be used to make an arcade accurate Tempest controller/spinner.
