Are there any 8-port s-video/audio switches?

You're going to have a very rough time finding something with 8 ports plus S-video that is cheap on top of it.

My understanding is only high end units are made to those kinds of specifications.
I found one really close unit on Amazon, but it doesn't quite meet your criteria...

The first one is the closest I found at 6 ports. Anything above seems either not available or incredibly expensive.

BIRUGEAR - 6 input, 1 output w/ S-video

The only problem with this request is that S-video seems to be uncommon on anything above about 4 input switches. Probably because somewhere on the number of ZERO new TVs use it.

(I had an old Vizio with two S-video, but my newest TV has nothing which makes me sad.)

I honestly think you're better off trying to daisy chain it and buy two smaller units to hook together. My understanding is that the output would only take a minor hit doing this. I know because I did it myself for the longest time and never really noticed anything.

Welp, if that's the case, then I might as well daisy chain. Just tired of having to be stuck with four systems only using S-video (N64/Sega Genesis/PlayStation 2/Sega Saturn) and having to use composite for 3 other systems (Dreamcast/NES/SNES).

Doing this would probably mean I would have to keep my NES on a VCR, but hey, that's good enough.

You think that's bad? http://atariage.com/forums/topic/234758-very-large-av-switch-box/

I needed something and struck out as well. Anything over 8 ports is commercial grade And good luck finding 8-ports S-Video version, S-Video wasn't well supported. When people started demanding better video quality than composhit, most players went all the way to component and HDMI so S-Video was mostly overlooked and left in the dust as a relic mainly for high end video tape player.

I did get an aluminum box and some ports plus a rotary switch, I just need to finish them up. About a mile worth of wires to connect everything.

If you're still trying to get S-Video and can't make custom switch box and are willing to pay a couple hundred dollars, you probably should look into upscaler instead. A good quality upscaler can convert older video to HDMI, add optional scanlines like CRT, and handle 4:3 on 16:9 TV.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mine's custom, still WIP it has rotary switch with multiple poles to handle composite, 2 separate video, and 2 audio lines. 12 system total to one box. Until it's finished I am still using 5x 5 ports switch box that I got from local store on clearance sale oh about 20 years ago.

reason I am asking is cause I cant find a reasonable cost rotary switch, which sends me down the path of a box that requires a wall wart

with a wall wart I could start producing a 8 port in 1 output composite / svideo + audio + amplification and filtering of said video output for around 70 bucks done and paid for ... but requires a wall outlet

for a manual rotary handles just svideo and audio no power required box im seeing 40 bucks just for the switch, nearly 30 bucks for connectors talking 70 bucks just in parts before postage then there's labor

I found a 6 pole 12 position switch on eBay for $6 plus shipping from UK. Beware of those from China or HK, the picture shows what looks like 2 pole 3 pos or 3 pole 2 pos switch, the seller from Asia is probably an idiot who doesn't know what 6p12t switch is.

Another one I had considered: http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/13/how-to-make-a-solid-state-a-v-switcher/ but I skipped this because I can't wire all those tiny pins at all.

using a chip is dead simple for me (I design and produce electronics in the several thousands a day at my work, a couple dozen at home isnt a issue) in fact I already have a design for a 8 to 1 svideo + stereo + composite which hits the price goal of above (almost all in box and connectors), but requires external power, which may or may not be a deal breaker, mechanical switches in low volume is impossible without a significant price spike, unless you had a reliable magic bullet
