jblenkle
Any NES experts out there? It's been a number of months since I plugged my NES in and when I did a few days ago, all I got on the screen was this - rolling black and white bars on the screen: My first guess was a bad power supply as I got a similar screen on my Atari 130XE when I plugged a bad power supply into it. As I don't have a 2nd NES or power supply to swap to see if it is the PS or the NES, I just wanted to ask the community out there if anyone has seen something similar or might know what is causing it. Thanks!
mickcris
Do you have a Genesis Model 1? you can use the power supply from it on the NES to test if the power supply is the problem. Dont do it the other way around though as you will hurt you Genesis with the NES power supply.
jblenkle
Yeah, someone already told me that and I tried it with the same result. But then someone else that has a video game repair service told me while the Genesis power supply plugs into the NES, it might not deliver sufficient power so I'm basically back where I started. mickcris
it works to power a NES. Not sure why you were told it would not. The Genesis PS puts out over an amp which is plenty. Sounds like its not the power supply then.
mickcris
Have you tried both RF and AV outputs?
icemanxp300
That looks like a power problem to me. Open system up and check the plug in, it may have a bad solder joint. Edited June 30, 2015 by icemanxp300
jblenkle
I believe the person said the amps were different and might effect whether it worked properly or not. it works to power a NES. jblenkle
Yes, I've tried both...same result...my gut still screams "power supply"...but I don't know. I've tried just about everything except swapping original NES power supplies and/or the NES itself. It's laying here partially disassembled on my desk right now. Can't see any internal corrosion or anything else. I've taken good care of it for the past 30 years. Have you tried both RF and AV outputs? jblenkle
OK, will try that tomorrow. Looks like another little RF shield will off to come off to see that. Thanks! That looks like a power problem to me. Open system up and check the plug in, it may have a bad solder joint.
mickcris
maybe the 2200uf cap went bad http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=475289 if its something with the power, then its probably inside the console since it did the same thing with a genesis supply. icemanxp300
I'd almost guarantee it's the power. Inside the plug In itself if you look at it from the back of the nes under the center pin there is a copper piece that pushes up. I actually had one of those that was not making a good connection. I ended up prying it up and royally effed it up. I still haven't went back to fix it.
jblenkle
OK, thanks...I will watch for this and be careful when I try to get in there and take a look. I'd almost guarantee it's the power. mickcris
Can you see the cap from the guide i linked to with the amount you have apart now? Its part of the power circuit. See if the top is bulged like here: http://www.markdigital.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/bulging_capacitors.jpg you may have to break out a voltmeter and see if you have voltage going into the 7805 voltage regulator and also 5v coming out. jblenkle
There is one of those sticking through a hole in the small RF shield and it does seem to have a very, very slight bulge in it...should it be perfectly flat on top? So would this be the problem then? I haven't taken the small shield off yet, but anything like that is probably beyond my meager abilty to fix. CatPix
It should be flat; tho already seen them bulging like that and still having a good capacity. But since you have an issue I'll point it as a possible troublemaker you should fix. Edited June 30, 2015 by CatPix
mickcris
Yeah, whether or not its your actually problem, you should replace it as it is bad or going bad. Is there some brown crud on the top (it sort of looks like it)? If it is, it probably has a hole in it.
jblenkle
No brown crud...just a slight bulge...but this is beyond my abilities to fix. I'm not even sure how to get the little silver RF box it's in open. I thought the top would just lift off when I undid two screws, but the whole thing is sealed. I'm sure it opens, but I don't want to risk damaging it further because I don't know what I'm doing. Yeah, whether or not its your actually problem, you should replace it as it is bad or going bad.
