Colecovision HDMI Mod

It's fast approaching that time of year when myself and most of you start to come inside as the weather is getting colder. If you are lucky enough to live in one of the warm states bare with me... As I migrate inside I start to think up what new upgrades I can come up with for the winter and new year. As some of you know I offer RGB mods for Intellivisions and designed the RGB mod for the Coleco. This winter I think I have set my sites on a couple new Mods. One is a HDMI output right from the Coleco.

That's right I envision the day when we just plug a hdmi cable right to the back of our modded Coleco and BOOM!!! Crisp Clear 1080p scaled video right to our new 60" LED TV. Well I may be dreaming... Maybe in a couple years I can afford the 60" LED, but at any rate the Hdmi Coleco may be upon us soon.

If there is a fair amount of interest I may unveil the prototype ......................... soon ................... Also some mock ups with where the connectors would be and such..

So let me know if this is something of interest and it could be on your Christmas list...............

then ill keep my f18a video board

The F18a is an excellent mod if you want VGA output. If your looking for HDMI right out of the back of your Coleco this is the Mod. Also your RF, Composite mods and RGB mods would be intact. Albeit if you already have the RGB mod this mod is probably not advantageous sense you already have a RGB to HDMI converter.

It would be a mod only service. You would have to send your Coleco in for the mod to be installed.

I asked you this earlier but didn't get a response. Are you replacing the video processor like an F18A? I'd be interested as long as sprite flicker is pretty much eliminated. I currently have the F18A and use a VGA to HDMI adapter.

It does not replace the TMS9928. There is no sprite flicker. I will post some pictures and video in the coming weeks. I am very busy this week so I won't be able to get to it right away.

I think the question really is... If I program a game with 5 sprites in a horizontal row (without programming any flicker or anything like that - just throwing 5 sprite up there), do all 5 show up, or just the first 4?

The TMS9928A would show 4 sprites, not 5, in this simple case.

If you're replacing the logic inside the TMS9928A, then it's up to you whether 4 or 5 sprites would be shown (like the F18A VGA mod).

If you're only tapping into the video outputs of the TMS9928A (not that that's a bad thing), then only 4 sprites would show up.

Personally, my question is... Will the HDMI mod work for any TMS9928A device (for instance a ColecoVision clone)?

There's no way I could answer that without seeing the clone and the schematic. So I'll go out on a limb and say this works with the Colecovision's original hardware only and all your games that are originally for the Coleco. If your talented enough to build a coleco clone then I'm sure you would implement your own video output. That would probably be easier then this mod to tell you the truth. If you used a fpga you could probably implement most of the Coleco and the video circuit and just have a few support components. It will not work with the Atari adapter because that bypasses the Coleco's video circuitry completely and goes right to the RF circuit.
