+atari2600land
I have decided that enough is enough. There are only a couple of homebrew games for the Game Gear. So I've decided to begin work on a new one. I will be learning how to program for the Game Gear as I go along. Case in point: The cloud is only 8x8. I had designed a 24x8 cloud, but I can't seem to get it programmed in. Anyway, the game is called Mr. Ultra. It is a Mario-type game. You can read my 9/26/15 blog entry for more info, but this is the latest version. After fighting with this stupid thing for hours, I have this done. Mr. Ultra is walking in the title screen. Pressing Start starts the game, but since there's no game since I haven't programmed that far, pressing Start will restart the title screen. You can download this zip file which contains source and the ROM if you want to play it on a Game Gear emulator. If you like what you see and want me to continue, please say so. mrultra20150927.zip
+atari2600land
I worked on adding the background for level 1 in. I had to redesign Mr. Ultra a little bit. Then I had to figure out why his face and the left half of the cloud were overlapping. Mr. Ultra is now sporting gray pants because the blue would probably interfere with the background when he jumps, or on future level background designs. Level 1: Funky Forest. This is it so far, I spent a few hours trying to display just this after the title screen. Thanks for the like, Shawn! +atari2600land
Mr. Ultra can now jump as well as walk in level 1. But he won't be bumping into anything since I haven't got that far yet. The next step is to figure out how to program a hole for him to jump over (or fall into.) I made a little webpage where you can download the latest Mr. Ultra binary files. You can find it here: http://www.atari2600land.com/mrultra/
Jinroh
Really cool, I have a Game Gear homebrew that's been sitting on my HD for a long time. I was thinking of finishing it as well. We need more GG Homebrews.
+atari2600land
Please, by all means, finish your Game Gear homebrew! I'm working on mine. I added a hole for Mr. Ultra to fall in. All the game does though is repeat the hole over and over again. My next step is to design an enemy for Mr. Ultra to avoid.
Jinroh
Thanks it's on my list. :3 I have to finish my VCS game first. Oh sweet, what kind of enemies is Mr. Ultra going to be battling?
+atari2600land
Oh sweet, what kind of enemies is Mr. Ultra going to be battling? Well, for starters, walking bananas. I spent all freaking night on this. It wasn't going too well. And then it all got together. Updated the rom on the Mr. Ultra webpage. Jinroh
Oh that's awesome! It's a funny coincidence too my game has food based enemies too. x3 What do you do step on them?
+atari2600land
You jump over them.
Jinroh
Ah ok. Good tactic. :
+atari2600land
The game now has music for level 1. It's a short, simple tune, but it's a lot better than silence.
+atari2600land
Here's what level 2 will look like. I will have jumping apples instead of walking bananas in level 2. Right now, the game is set up for the same for both levels, but that will change.
+atari2600land
Level 2 is now slippery. That's what happens when you walk on ice.
+atari2600land
Level 2 is now finished. It loops infinitely after you beat level 1.
Jinroh
Oh nice, level 2 looks sweet! The slippery mechanic should be cool to switch it up.
+atari2600land
I think I have about 75% left of free space to work with. I'll be making this a 48k game. So plenty of room for more levels. I'm aiming for 8 different levels.
+atari2600land
Preliminary work has begun on level 3, Groovy Gulch. I need a positive sounding adjective that begins with the letter M to go with Mountain. Level 1 is Funky Forest. And I said in the corn thread that the corn will be in level 3, I will have to change that to level 4. Red peppers are in level 3. And watch out, the first pair start as soon as you enter the level. (After you jump over them, then you can rest if need be!)
+atari2600land
I changed it to corn after all. It's easier to see against the brown background.
Jinroh
Oh nice that's some sweet looking corn! Hmm...magnanimous, macho, marvelous, miracle, mando, any of those?
+swlovinist
sweet to see the Game Gear get a new game
+atari2600land
Marvelous Mountain sounds great. I changed the button to jump from 1 to 2. It just feels more natural, I guess since that's how Super Mario Bros. does it. I am also getting a Game Gear Everdrive so I can test the game on real hardware. Jinroh
Ah great! Marvelous Mountain sounds cool! I'll definitely give it another go when I get home.
+atari2600land
A sneak peek at level 4: Bodacious Beach.
+atari2600land
Level 4 is done. I think I'll quit working on this for a few days. In case you missed the link in my signature, I'm posting the latest version here as well. It loops level 4 if you beat it. mrultra20151007.zip
+atari2600land
Life system installed in the game. You get three to start with.
