XC11 where does the spring go

Hello,

after opening a XC11, a conical spring and a little black washer/round plate fell out. Where do they go when reassembling the XC11?

Why did I open it in the first place? I had one defective unit with bad counter and stuck PLAY-Button. Opend it, spring and washer fell out. Next unit had damaged exterior, so I opened that one (spring an washer fell out) and transplanted the mechanics, counter and cable.

I suppose these go on the little black wheel between the two capstans: Wheel, spring (with large side to wheel), black washer (small side to spring).

Is that right?

Best,

F.

Had the same question in the German forum www.abbuc.de, where somebody pointed me out to a picture in a Polish forum.

Turns out the black washer in my XC11 had a crack. This plastic tends to crack when under pressure after all these years. Same with the micro cogwheels in the 1020 printer (which can be replaced by metal ones from model helicopter supply).

It ought to sit tight on the axle having the spring very much compressed between the wheel and the washer.

Superglue helped to keep it in its place.

Correct order of parts: wheel - spring with large end to wheel - little thin black metal washer, which sits inside the plastic washer - plastic washer with the flat side top, the side with the grove (for the little flat metal washer) downwards.

NB the broken washer only negatively affects FFWD and REV operation, not PLAY. Other cogwheels (slower speed) are used for that transmission (PLAY).

Thanks all for helping!

Sorry for bringing an old topic to the forefront, but was hoping maybe the OP might still be around, although not posted in nearly a year.

I have the same trouble with my XC11 (which I bought to replace a dead 1010 about 30 years ago)

The black washer/cap bit of mine isn't cracked....but just keeps popping off after a couple of uses of rewind. I've pressed it on, but it doesn't seem to hold onto the spindle, and springs off.

Did you put superglue on both the black wheel (then put the spring on) and also glue on the black cap, then pressed down and hold?

Looking at the amount of plastic available I would have thought the glue would have stuck to the spindle also, thus not being so easy to turn.

This is my last resort unless anyone else has any ideas.

The XC11 is a great tape device, and very solidly built, and I am reluctant to discard it....my XC12 drive seems quite flimsy in comparison

Thanks for this information, @FlorianD!

I had the same problem (i.e. the black washer was cracked, so it lost grip on the axe and got loose, releasing the conical spring).

Like you suggested, I've put a little superglue on the top of the small plastic socket around the axe, and then put the spring on top of the wheel and pushed the washer back onto the axe.

Fast-forward and Reverse works fine again now!!
