XEGS blue/tan cart "Must Haves"

Hi there,

I recently bought an XEGS and then went ahead and ordered a 1050 to hook up to it, and a keyboard extension cable. I'm wondering (as I plan to eventually put together a solid 8 bit cartridge and floppy collection together) which of the 32 official XEGS releases (in blue packaging, with tan cart) do you consider "must haves." I want to build this part of my collection first before delving into the brown/yellow carts and floppies. Thanks!!

Ace of Aces 1987

Airball 1988

Archon: The Light and the Dark 1987

Ballblazer 1987

Barnyard Blaster 1987

Battlezone 1987

Blue Max 1987

Bug Hunt 1987

Choplifter 1988

Crime Buster 1987

Crossbow 1987

Crystal Castles 1988

Dark Chambers 1987

David's Midnight Magic 1987

Desert Falcon 1987

Donkey Kong 1987

Eastern Front (1941) 1987

Fight Night 1987

Flight Simulator II 1987

Food Fight 1987

GATO 1987

HardBall! 1987

Into the Eagle's Nest 1987

Karateka 1987

Lode Runner 1987

Mario Bros. 1987

Necromancer 1987

One-on-One Basketball 1987

Rescue on Fractalus! 1987

Star Raiders II 1987

Summer Games 1987

Thunderfox

I was able to order Archon, Blue Max, Donkey Kong, Karateka (last copy they had) and Rescue on Fractalus from Best (they were sold out of Mario Bros.) What else should I look into from this list?

Thanks!!

I'd rate Ballblazer, Donkey Kong, Necromancer, Rescue on Fractalus!, Star Raiders II, Summer Games high up on the list.

There's a few I've not played so they might be worthy of inclusion too. Things like Hardball, Ace of Aces, Crystal Castles, David's Midnight Magic, Into the Eagles Nest, One on One Basketball.

Note that most of the games you've listed were previously available and many were early 1980s disk releases so it's not imperative to own the cart other than collectability reasons. Though in some cases the cartridge would be more common/less valuable than original disk + box + manual.

I've included the non-official releases here too, which can be obtained from Video61.

My choices are in bold. Donkey Kong is the same as the brown cart version, which can be had much cheaper. I think the same is true for Eastern Front 1941.

I think Best has a cartridge version of Bruce Lee, which was planned to be an XE release too, I believe. Bruce Lee is really good too.

I will add that Fight Night really isn't a hugely fun game to play, in terms of gameplay. It can be somewhat boring and slightly frustrating at times. But the reason I included it on the list is because it's pretty nicely done graphically, the characters are interesting and sometimes funny (they'll piss you off even), and the boxer construction is fun/funny to play around with. So overall it's a pretty interesting game. I had a lot of fun with it as a kid.

I'm pretty sure I saw a choplifter not long ago on ebay, somewhere in Germany. It was extremely expensive.

I'm not a collector, although it is always nice to have the whole row complete.

If you are really into gaming (more than into collecting) you'd should get yourself a MyIDE 2 or Sio2SD or a SIDE2

Although Karateka is slow, I love that game! Blue Max is very nice too.

Blue Max is an outstanding game... A great arcade shooter with some depth. I have an extra copy - PM me if you're interested.

Crime Buster and Barnyard Blaster are graphically-nice light gun games, if you're playing on a proper CRT display.

Thunderfox is nicely done, if insanely difficult...

I'm definitely not going for a "complete collection" but would like to have the best titles that were released for the system. I have been talking to Steve at Atarimax and will be getting a MyIDE 2 soon for sure.

Lode Runner is a good platformer, if not graphically spectacular.

Archon is very good, especially playing against another good player, but also against the computer.

Eastern Front is technically impressive for it's time but only worth buying if you like strategy games. Not a quick diversion.

Good lord! The legendary pile of Loderunners actually exists! I remember your stories about it, but this is the first time I see them :D

Those Lode Runners keep chasing me. I know I have at least another box, and likely a 3rd, packed away somewhere with loose carts and while recently opening a box with 8-bit stuff I received over 2 years ago I found 4 more and an extra 1 in another box.

The funny thing is that these are likely from the same batch of close to 100 Lode Runners carts we bought lot's of years ago. We did split up the pile and gave some away but somehow most of them all end up at my place. Still have 10 boxes or so which I even never opened. All I know is there should be only A8 stuff in them so who knows how many of those carts I'll find in these.

BigBen has been searching for cartridge shells. I'm not sure if he still works with cartridges a lot. You've probably met BigBen at one of ABBUCs JHV's.

Yes, we talked a bit at the jhv but that's a few years ago. I don't attend jhv's anymore and am not an ABBUC member either since quiet a few years.

Never thought about getting rid of the cartridges. Not used to Atari things leaving the house. Reason I got them was for projects and already used some for that (like EPROM with other game or re-using shell for a custom PCB) but I don't think I'll ever going to use all of them.

Hello Robert

If you ever consider getting rid of them, I can ask BigBen. I don't know if Rene visits you from time to time, but if he picks them up at your place, I can pick them up at his and bring them to a meeting that BigBen also attents.

Sincerely

Mathy

They don't take up much space so I think I'll keep them. I only see Rene at the jHV's if it happens we're both there. So, no, we never meet.
