Interface problem between Jag CD and Flip-Out!

Been searching the forums and internet for a while about this to no avail, so I thought now was the time to ask directly.

I bought a copy of Flip-out for the Jaguar a few weeks ago and it has an interesting problem: it won't play through the cartridge port on my CD unit, but will play if I take off the CD unit and use the base jaguar. I was curious if anyone has had this problem with Flip-out or any other game (my 16 other cartridges get along with the Jag CD just fine) and possibly know why this happens.

Also, would like to say thanks for the entertainment of reading some of the post on the Jaguar board. And thanks to sh3-rg for making the beebris/jagwar font, really helpful in making awesome labels for my cartridges.

Interesting. I think this is the first time I heard of Flipout having any issues. But I've never owned the actual cartridge. It works fine if I load the rom into the skunkboard and use it through the CD. On occasion I have experienced an issue with I-war where the music starts playing but the title screen doesn't come up and the screen is black, but removing it and reinserting once or twice usually solves that issue. IIRC, I may have had an issue with Pitfall not working through the CD player, but after a couple of attempts it would eventually work. This is all, of course with the cart slot and cartridges cleaned of tarnish and dust. Have you cleaned the carts and cart slots? They are the touchiest part of the system, and even if most games work fine, it could still be an issue, I've had times were some carts work and some don't and a good cleaning all around has resolved the issue.

I think it has to do more with the "individual" cart than an entire game, since my Flip out runs fine in my Jag CD.

Maybe the add-on has some more problems since the cart slot on it has some fixating plastic rails/parts holding the cart in a more straight position, when you on the regular Jag cart slot can bend the cart a little back or forward to find connection... maybe.

Thanks for the replies.

I have cleaned the cartridge in question numerous times, but it has been a while since I cleaned the cartridge port (even if it has a little homemade dust cover, it could still get nasty I suppose). I routinely clean all of my cartridge based games and that is usually the first thing I do when they don't work.

I know I have to carefully place my AVP cartridge in the slot to get it to read correctly, so maybe there is something to the positioning thing. The Jag CD doesn't even seem to recognize the Flip-out cartridge, unless I push it forwards and all that does is reset the CD. The CD unit in question may not be the best though...it used to skip audio tracks on cds if I got to close to it while it played them. Then again I basically resuced this Jaguar with CD from an old record/video game shop; I had to clean both cartridge ports, reset a few pins, and disassemble the at the time nonfunctional CD unit to clean the PCB connector (which looked like it had been underwater for a few years)

I'll clean the cartridge ports with rubbing alcohol and see if anything changes.

Gunstar, you were correct. Both of my troublesome cartridges work just fine through the Jag CD after cleaning both of the cartridge connectors (base unit and cd). I know these things are supposed to be infamously finicky, but I guess I underestimated my unit :). Thanks to everyone for all the input.

I had this happen with Doom lastnight, yet all my other carts work fine. So I put it down to dirty or worn contact on the cart.

My first professional programming job was working at Gorilla Systems, the makers of this game. I sat across from Benjos, the main programmer. He was a really cool guy and was probably a genius. He wore the same t shirt every day but I didn't care. He had skills. That was back when I was 20 and still in school. Brings back memories.

Cool, thanks for sharing. Were they any other Jag games planned at Gorilla? What did you work on?

I worked there for a few months during college. I was one of only four programmers. At the time I was using Direct Draw at home and tried to convince the team to adopt it. They had their own lightning fast assembly language renderers for 2D and full motion video. I told them I could get better reform acne using the hardware with less code. At one point they asked if I wanted to go to lunch but said "but you can't talk about DirectDraw". I was working on Polly Pockets Adventures in PollyLand for Mattel. The game said that title every launch and drove me crazy. After a while they had me switch to building out printing support for the Barnett Bank online banking Netscape plugin they wrote. I had to teach myself Windows programming which was cool. I did that and then quit. They paid me $8.50 an hour as a C programmer. I also wrote a driver update for their Hot Wheels mouse which I don't thin ever shipped. I had a PC with a board that connected to a Genesis. My PC had roms on it and I could flash the developer cartridge whenever I wanted. We played games sometimes. There were about thirty 2D and 3D artists there, some producers who also did voice acting, and a sound guy. The tables were rough cut wood to go with the Gorilla theme. The owners were two brothers and they were also programmers. I demoed my 2D tank warfare game when I was hired in 96. It was my dream job but the reality kicked in and I kind of hated it. Sometimes I wish I had stayed but there were a couple of irritants I couldn't live with. I kept doing game programming at home for a while before I got sucked into corporate America.
