"Secretum Labyrinth : The Legend" Is now available on cartridge. The Game requires an Atari XL/XE computer with 64K RAM. It requires a joystick and some keyboard usage to select and use items in your inventory. This is a Role Playing Adventure Game that fills in a gap for the Atari 8-bit in that there had been many Arcade Action Role Playing Adventure type games. We put a lot of hard work into this game, months of extensive beta testing.

The cartridge is available for $39.95, and comes with an instruction manual.

Here are the 2nd set of screen shots. If you are wondering why the text was blurred out from the scrolls, it was to avoid releasing too many spoilers about the game. Also the screen shots are all done out of sequence as well as the video to reduce the spoilers and no one can figure out how to solve the game just by viewing pictures or video.

The "Secretum Labyrinth The Legend" (cartridge) and "Secretum Labyrinth Kings Gold" does make use of Super IRG, and Multicolor mode on player/missile graphics that provides around color values in the play area of the screen. Some of the rooms vary the color palettes slightly so I can say this is a very colorful game. Thankyou for the comment, I hope to keep things positive on this thread.

This is my first attempt to make extensive use of Super IRG mode that alternates between two fonts, checkerboard and bar dithering techniques. I know this is my second game released using Super-IRG, "Delta Space Arena" was the first, but I did not start making that game until the summer of 2014. The Adventure RPG engine had been in development since early 2012, and I made these "Secretum Labyrinth" games for people to play.

There are differences between "Kings Gold" and "The Legend" both with the game and with the programming. In "Kings Gold," you can only advance to skill level 7, and cannot go beyond 99 hitpoints. Has a limit of 95 rooms. There is also a different weapon. You only need to collect 6 treasures to solve, 3 gold coins, and 3 gold stars.

"The Legend" you can advance as far as level 21 and have up to 254 hitpoints. Has 256 room map on a 16x16 grid. Two more weapons are available. You need to collect 16 treasures, each with a different image. You need to do certain tasks to get beyond some points in the game.

What would people like to see for a second cartridge game? I had thought about going as large as a 576 room map on a 24x24 grid. More monsters, weapons, and perform different tasks to get beyond a certain point in the game. Cab go over 1000 room, however, the larger you go, the harder it gets to debug the map. If a door leads into a room, but there is not one leading back out the same way, you will be trapped.

A sequel game is in the planning stage right now. What I might do is make it less dependent on SuperIRG and P/M Multiplexing for more colors and do something with the DLIs to change background colors in screen regions. I know flickering can be a problem with certain displays.

I am working with something with the word "DARK" in the title, S.L.:Dark Times, Dark Castles (Mansion, Palace, etc), or simplify it to Dark Labyrinth so people know it is a different from the first two games.

I would like to hear back from people that enjoy games like "Advance Dungeons and Dragons" or video games like "Zelda" to give me some feedback to help me plan on the design. As I mentioned in "Games Like Zelda" thread, I avoided using too many similar elements from Zelda so I make this game my own. I know there were people that wanted the "HEART METER" instead of Experience / Hit Points / level. What other icon could I had used instead of an "Heart Meter"?

I am probably never going to do a full Attribute system as seen in "Advance Dungeons and Dragons" inside of an Atari Game. Where AD&D had 6 plus whatever is Class specific. I might keep it to two attributes for character development. I noticed many of those MMORPGS don't go crazy with an attribute system either. Does anybody play these adventure / RPG games?

This will be a cartridge game with new advance features and graphics not seen in the prior games. "Secretum Labyrinth:Kings Gold" will still serve as a downloadable demo for these Role Playing Adventure Games.

Here is a Longer Play Video of Secretum Labyrinth:The Legend. Six Minutes of game play shown. It was set to Random Quest so it will not spoil for anyone looking to buy the cartridge. Demonstrates Sword and Hammer Usage. The different Keys and Monsters you see in the game. I am not about to do a long play of Standard Quest yet so no one figures out how to get all the treasures.

Secretum Labyrinth:The Legend will remain available on Cartridge only. Secretum Labyrinth:Kings Gold is still freely available for download. These are two different games with different weapons, monsters, and treasures. The skill level and promotion system also works different. After all we don't want to have Kings Gold spoil too many things and how to solve. The Legend.

Secretum Labyrinth 3 is in the works and I am working on doing something different for this game with more rooms, monsters, weapons. Might add an armor system, upgrading armor. Collecting money and going to places to buy things. A much more involved game. Anybody interested in seeing it complete.

I released "Secretum Labyrinth:Kings Gold" with good faith to show I can put out a free game so that the rhetoric over "digital downloads" stays away from here. Instead of making them buy the cartridge before they can see anything, a smaller game in the same series is freely available. I did not include all the features and make its story as a prequel to "The Legend" to give people a reason to buy the cartridge. I believe it did work, sold over 30 cartridges so far and is still selling. I tried my best to keep these Action/Adventure games original, only borrowing elements from other various games of this type. No one can claim to have a patent on "Adventure Games" or "Role Playing Games". From what I see, whenever someone makes these games, they use parts of these games in different ways unique to their game.

Work for Secretum Labyrinth 3 will be starting up next month. I am looking into ways to pack more into those Williams 64K cartridges using compression. Something I want to do is really improve the graphics and start getting away from that block look, maybe do the wall with a little bit of the side. I am working on doing something different for this game with more rooms, monsters, weapons. Might add an armor system, upgrading armor. Collecting money and going to places to buy things. There will not be a demo for "Secretum Labyrinth 3" as "Kings Gold" was meant to be the lead in for my Adventure Game Series.

I would like to share another review.

http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=7702.0

I am currently working on an Atari 5200 port that will be part of the Secretum Labyrinth series. In will be a different and new game with a new map, title, maybe some additional items, monsters, and music.

A 7800 port had been mentioned, but I will need to figure out 7800 character/tile setup type of display then I can re-use the screen drawing routine for the many rooms.

One thing that is ongoing with me is figuring out how to encode Music for the Atari. Port songs from Midi with OpenMPT. I am working on songs for another Adventure Game on the Atari 8-bit computer. For practice I ported this song in celebration of this shows 25th anniversary.

I really want to go much further with an Adventure game on a bigger cartridge. 128K XEGS possible with 1000s of rooms, monsters, traps, characters to interact with. Secretum Labyrinth x 1000.

Holy crap... For a commercial game with "months of extensive beta testing", it sure has its share of horrible grammar and dubious spelling...

????

What is spelled incorrect or where was grammar used poorly? I checked many of those texts through a word processor before copying them to the game source code. Some Latin and Middle English was used in the game. Sometimes texts had to be reworded to make it fit the screen. Used some tricks on word play so the player has something to figure out. How do you know if there is misspellings inside cartridge game? Do you own one of the cartridges?

Secretum Labyrinth : The Legend is still available on cartridge. I decided on the Latin word "Secretum" instead of "Secret" to help set it apart from other games.

Just to tell everyone, the video at the start of this thread is a teaser video that is spliced together out of sequence and I may had deleted parts of the other videos so no can really look at them and use them as a cheat for the real game. I want the game full of surprises for those who bought the game. I even put in a false text for the scroll in one of the video.

"The Ancient Knight Payton had the task of hiding the Kings Wealth if the Kingdom is overtaking by an invasion" for instance or "You will need the Knights Bravery and Wisdom to find the Kings wealth".

Reads like bad translations from someone else's work in another language. The ancient knight Payton was tasked with hiding the Kings wealth in the event the kingdom was overtaken by invasion. You will need the bravery and wisdom of a knight to find the kings wealth.

It almost seams to be an inversion of order related to language. German, or Dutch possibly, or other root appears involved. The mistakes don't appear to be in natural English ordered language. It also doesn't appear to be styled after old English to add atmosphere to the game. It doesn't resemble Latin-English cross pollination though given the title that would make sense.

"The Ancient Knight Payton had the task of hiding the Kings Wealth if the Kingdom is overtaking by an invasion" for instance or "You will need the Knights Bravery and Wisdom to find the Kings wealth".

This is coming from a scroll from "Secretum Labyrinth Kings Gold" not "The Legend." I can fix "Kings Gold" if someone has issues with the wording, I can fix the one available for download. I tried to find web pages or get help with trying to make things sound more Old English, but could not find any good web pages at the time that could easily to assist me with that. Al least from thy Google search results back in 2013. I found some dictionaries, but that would taken me more time than I was willing to spend making an adventure game. Think there is an online translator that does it one word at a time. Whole sentences or paragraphs probably not make sense.

However, more recently found this: https://lingojam.com/EnglishtoShakespearean

"The ancient knight payton hadst the task of hiding the kings wealth if 't be true the kingdom is ov'rtaking by an invasion. Thee shall needeth the knights brav'ry and wisdom to findeth the kings wealth."

or use this language: " ta' mIp So' vaj ghaH Qun'a' wo' Qu' ghaj tIQ SuvwI' payton pong yot. nIS SuvwI' yoH je porghvam ta' mIp vItu' "

Some people may understand Old English or Shakespeare style English. So it may be better to leave in some modern English wording.

"The ancient knight payton hadst the task of hiding the kings wealth if it be true that kingdom is overtaken by invasion. Thee shall need the knights bravery and wisdom to findeth the kings wealth."

Here is one for you "I shall not alloweth mine own w'rks beest taken by thieves. Payeth the price 'r nay w'rks f'r thee."

As far as the texts on the cartridge game are concerned. Video61 and the beta testers pointed out several grammar and spelling mistakes and did not want to release the cartridge unless things were correct.

oh and with and apostrophe .... lol

"Secretum Labyrinth : Klingon Warrior" coming soon. But I need to get permission from Paramount/CBS, the copyright owners of Star Trek before going forward, if I want to make a cartridge I can sell. Anyone know about Paramount + CBS vs "Axenar"? States they welcome fan made production as long as they do not raise over $50,000 USD of fan donations, video cannot be over 15 minutes long, etc. For a video game, would be a free game, can ask for donations ahead of time to pay for my personal labor for making the game and equipment I may need, Video61 will also be in trouble for selling. Same will apply if I did something for Star Wars, DC or Marvel comic hero(s), or anything else owned.

I know people will complain about even the most minor problem and when I say anything about fixing them, they complain about programs on cartridge ROM cannot be fixed, just to try to get the game for free. But wait "Secretum Labyrinth Kings Gold" is a free game that I can fix at anytime. It is designed to be up gradable to demonstrate anything new, or beta test features that I am doing with the Secretum Labyrinth game series.

This could also be an issue with my choice of the wording could be how different English regions use the language. I speak American English (and some Klingon.) What if I said "You all need Knights Bravery an' Wisdom to get Kings wealth" or " "You will need the Knights Bravery and Wisdom to find the Kings treasures mate"

I would say forget Klingon for a while and focus on English.

Let that sink in folks. :)
