Atari 4160 STE casing - shattered

Hi all,

 

I got a perfect-in-working-order 4160 STE from eBay a few weeks ago, but due to sheer insane work/life schedule I didn't get a chance to look at it, and it was just stuck in a second-hand box in my cabinet for a few weeks. I finally got to look at it last night and the pristine casing has been utterly wrecked.

 

I think it was stored on it side when being conveyed by post, and the weight of the electronics was too much for the Tramiel-value casing. It's a mess in there.

 

I'm pretty sure the STE itself works fine though (will check tonight), but does anyone know where I can get a replacement casing for an STE? Is it pretty much the same casing as an STFM?

 

Otherwise is the bottom half of the casing unit-specific (given its RGB port) but the top half which houses the keyboard generic for all units?

The top is pretty interchangeable, but I wouldn't get an STFM base. There are several extra ports on the STe which you'd have to cut holes for and the internal metal shielding doesn't fit that well between the two (I did have STE internal metal shielding in an STFM bottom case and had problems).

 

If by any chance you are in the UK and are planning to throw the broken top out, could I take it off your hands? I have a bit of a Franken ST here with half a top case, and I could probably use your bits regardless of the state of them.

Thanks for the advice. Shame I can't find a replacement top case anywhere! If I find one, I'll hit you up with the damaged one. It's currently stored away again, seems too heartbreaking to look at it right now!

Hi just to let you know I found a replacement case, but I threw the old one away. It was so badly damaged there was barely a remnant of the casing left. It was like a jigsaw puzzle in there.

Boo, I'm an expert with polystyrene cement Ah well the search continues, glad you got a new case
