Danimal Collective
Hey guys, Been a long time since I posted here but I just recently started rebuilding my Atari 7800 collection from scratch. I got one that works (I think) and I've gotten Midnight Mutants and Ninja Golf in perfect shape. Neither worked, so I got new ones, sealed, they didn't work. Dig Dug works, Donkey Kong Jr. works. Pole Position II works. I'm 90% sure those games that wont work are NTSC, I cleaned the ever loving crap out of them. I just don't know.Is it possible that my unit is just going bad and it won't work with later games? I know Dig Dug, DK Jr. and PP II are all like 88 and before and Ninja Golf and Midnight Mutants are 90 and after. Does that even make sense those wouldn't work? They make it to the multi-colored Atari banner and then blank screen, sometimes they make a mono-toned squeal. Is it bad ROMs four times in a row? Anybody ever hear of this?
nosweargamer
Random Question: Do you have a 7800 2 button joystick plugged in when you turn it on? I once thought my Midnight Mutants cart was bad, however I only had a single button controller in it. Either a standard 2600 joystick or a Sega Genesis pad without an adapter. When I started it with a Pro-line controller, game started up perfectly.

Sapicco
http://atariage.com/forums/topic/236936-mario-bros-7800-cart-prob/?fromsearch=1 I had similar issues, never figured it out. May buy a new console that is confirmed to work with Mario and dk before purchase though.

If the game carts were dirty, they would never get past the integrity check with the rainbow screen upon boot. If the cart passes this rainbow screen, it generally means the connections are error free.

OK calling shenanigans on this, I just got a 7800 out of the wild and its pretty dirty on the inside, I also just got 2 carts (food fight and chop lifter) from the back bottom corner of the retro game store where I am pretty much the only guy buying atari stuff, been sitting around long enough the price tag started to yellow lol I fired up the system and got nothing, inserted and removed the carts 3-4 times, got the bootsplash then crapped out, removed the carts 3-4 more times and they boot fine, BUT if a bird farts outside the window they would lock up cleaned carts, cleaned cart slot works fine, so just cause you get the rainbow doesnt mean everything is perfect
Danimal Collective
Just an update, it must have been the system. I got a new 7800 and it works perfectly with the CX78 joypads and the games all work. So strange, no game past '88 worked. I wonder what was changed.BTW, enjoying the hell out of Midnight Mutants and Ninja Golf right now Also a quick note, because Ninja Golf has no music (aside from the sparse musical sting every so often) I found the soundtrack to Kung Fury fits the game perfectly. Did you get it to work with the Sega controller with a two-button adapter?
