Even though Ep 21 is still in editing at the time of this posting, I am hoping to get back on schedule, so I posting this now in hope to work on Ep 22 as soon as I get 21 posted.

I'm looking for feedback for the next episode of the Atari 7800 Game By Game Podcast (you can find it on iTunes, Stitcher, YouTube or use this feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/78gbg )

What are your memories and/or thoughts on Motor Psycho & Fatal Run on the 7800?

Also, how would you rate them? I use a system of 4 choices (From Best to Worst):

Hall of Fame Game (Top 5 game on the system)

Solid Game

"Meh" Game

Trash Game (Bottom 5 game on the system)

These games will be covered on Episode 22.

You can also e-mail text or audio to atari7800podcast@aol.com

Just keep it family friendly :)

You can also send feedback on previously covered games or the system itself. Thanks!

Two very bland games IMO. Without hesitation, both get a 'meh' from me.

Motor Psycho should have been more like Road Rash and Fatal Run should be a lot more fun than it is, but it isn't.

Since reacquiring and rebuilding a 7800 collection (focused on actually playing/enjoying vs. collecting), I haven't once even considered adding these back. If it wasn't for this thread or running across them online, not sure I'd have remembered they even exist. ;)

I absolutely LOVE Fatal Run, the combination of racing and destruction, with some strategy, exploding people, and an ending. It's not for everyone, and it needs polish (turning graphics, etc) but it is a must-have for me.

Motor Psycho is Pole Position with jumping and poor TIA sound. It isn't unplayable, just kind of lackluster.

Some golden opportunities to be shared between the two Atari entities, but nope! :(

Well, they did hammer out a licensing agreement for a few years which mainly benefitted the Lynx - and the Falcon030 - but then it fell apart over a dispute over royalty payments causing the Jaguar not to receive any of those titles repeating the issue that seriously hurt the 7800.

Both "meh" for me.

Motor Psycho is basically a rehash of Pole Position 2, adding jumping, hills and a title screen.

Fatal Run has interesting elements not usually seen in 7800 games - password selection with english words; intermission cut scenes, a store to upgrade your car and an animated ending. But I found it so boring and repetitive after a while and the colors very poor.

Motor Psycho = Hall Of Fame. Furnishing a very challenging and awesome ride, this racer provides fantastic road scrolling, jumping, stunts, obstacles, hill encounters, and non-stop excitement. For those easily frustrated, or coming off of the older and much easier to handle Pole Position II, this may leave some a tad discouraged. Take heart though, this game pays out and does so big time. A key piece for obtaining maximum satisfaction and enjoyment is to realize the need to realistically handle sharp, hair-pinned turns, by dropping to "lo" gear. It is pretty unforgiving if one does not. Time penalty for crashes is often great; so a few accidents, and even just one accident in the harder of the four available tracks, provide little to no mercy. Nonetheless, an individual may find themselves relishing in the challenge, with its relentless methods of pushing their gaming limits and abilities. This is one to beat and experience with its large racer sprites and phenomenal racing thrills.

Fatal Run = Meh. The drab color palette while driving in this game, appropriately emphasizes the overall drab gameplay experienced the majority of the time, while engaging this title behind the wheel. It is quite boring and mundane. It practically drives the player to crash their vehicle just to spruce up the challenge and break up the monotony. While not scraping the bottom of the barrel, it is hard to see this release as anything better than mediocre.

Motor Psycho -- a very late 7800 game, I was curious to see what the programmers could wring out of the old girl by this point in it's lifetime. The only motorcycle racing game for the system, I like the detailed title screen and the fact you have four courses to pick from. Gameplay reminds me strongly of a cross between Pole Position and Hang On. The music and sounds of this game are terrible....if there was ever a game that needed a POKEY chip, oh boy, was this it! I had to hit mute within a matter of seconds. Controls are simple enough but it takes a while to get the hang of playing this well. After a couple frustrating races I tried Trebor's idea of dropping to 'Low' gear on curves and found myself doing better. Graphics are really good -- this is one of the best looking 7800 games, I think -- but it suffers like most 7800 games from having a bland and washed out color palate. I like how you can customize the controls also. You really need a fine touch, a lot of finesse, and a good deal of pratice to do well. Being able to do jumps and stunts is a nice touch. All in all, this is a solid racing game, one of the best racing games on the 7800, very challenging but it can be rewarding if you stick with it. If I was a racing fan I'd give it a Solid.....it takes a hit for me only cause with a few exceptions I don't much like straight racing games like this. Rating: Meh

Fatal Run -- another very late 7800 racing game, this is a game that I found really unique for several reasons -- mix of racing and strategy aspects, a password feature, cutscenes, a ending, and really good graphics. There's also a attempt at music during game play, something that sounds not great but not horrible either....it didn't make me hit mute, so that's saying something! It's a slower paced racing game, and I'd say it requires strategy as well, to get weapons and destroy enemy cars and manage your damage while trying to get to town as fast as possible to save as many lives as you can. There's a lot going on here and it takes a bit to get the hang of it, but once I did I found this game quite fun, trying to make it to the next town as fast as possible while taking as little damage as possible and then choosing what to buy in the shop. I'm also reminded of a behind the car version of Spy Hunter playing this. Controls handle well and with 32 stages there's a lot here to keep you engaged for a while. Seeing who lives and dies when you end the stage is a nice touch! Overall I think this is a unique and fun game for the system. It's not quite as impressive on the 7800 as the 2600 version is -- that one REALLY pushes the system to it's limits -- but it's a good game. Rating: Solid

Fatal Run: Solid Game. Fatal Run is Pole Position that meets Roadblasters. A fun game overall as you blow other vehicles up and making it to the next city in the allotted time limit to save the people there. Negatives is that it's hard to see oncoming vehicles and staying on the road. Grade B

Motor Psycho: Borderline Meh and Solid. Motor Psycho is not a motorcycle combat racing game. It is like Pole Position and Hang-On. The turns are a bit tricky to manuever and you need to change gears as you make the curves. The graphics are ok and the sound seems a bit glitchy. Grade: C
