Koji77 Posted December 16, 2015 Share Posted December 16, 2015 Guys, My PC died and I have upgraded to a windows 10 machine (MAINGEAR) the unit obviously no longer has a floppy so I purchased an external USB unit...... Which I now read won't work. Can someone in simple step by step instructions tell me what I need or what I can do so I can again write st games back to floppy using my windows 10 pc. Maybe I am nostalgic.... but believe it or not, the magic and imagination and wonder that I remember as a young man and child is in the 8-bit and ST systems. I want this experience for my kids. The world today that I believed in yesterday has become a joke. The people we are today, at least in my demographic are those that dreamed and had imagination....intestinal fortitude, we remember taking tubes to radio shack to test and replace. As I said in my original post, is there anyway, or anyone who can take windows 10 and write ST games back to a USB floppy? If not so be it.... this is the best forum for our "yesterday" machine that provided us so many and obviously a special many years that bond us together today on this forum. Thanks in advance!!! Instead that long nostalgic talk you should clearly write that you have UltraSatan - unless second part of name is forbidden there I have nothing against nostalgia, and I started to work in electronic when tube televisions were still in use. But digital technology was already awakening (like SW 7 ) . All in all, you must forget idea about USB floppy drives, and use your Ultra(Satan) for transferring floppy image files to Atari, and write floppies with Atari. What is btw. always more reliable - writing on same drive ensures better readability. I will not talk here about how add files on Atari SD card, just about Atari SW for writing images onto floppies: On this page is some: http://atari.8bitchip.info/floimgd.php At top is Windows SW, but it works not with USB drives (and will never work). However, you may use it for image format conversion - ST to MSA and vs. May use to extract and add files from/to images. Little lower is Atari floppy SW. So can format in wider range than with Desktop formatter. TRACC can write images onto floppies - ST and MSA as most popular formats are supported. leech Posted December 17, 2015 Share Posted December 17, 2015 I believe in another post somewhere I had read people were either using dd in Linux, or using some other raw image writer within Windows to do it. I'm stuck in the same boat, and I debated on ordering a UltraSatan the same time I was ordering the NetUSBee. Maybe I still can, not sure if Lotharek has sent out my order or not yet. Either that or I was thinking of getting an HxC Floppy emulator, but like the original poster, I think I'd miss the sounds of the floppy drive! leech Posted December 18, 2015 Share Posted December 18, 2015 Wouldn't that be the case of any 'real' floppy drive for a PC as well? 800KB for Atari STs and 880KB for the Amiga. Granted most of the 800KB ones would be non-TOS formatted games that did odd things anyhow, and would be hard to write to floppy. I mostly was thinking of just using the 1440kb one to put install disks on for the initial setup. But I do now have a NetUSBee and UltraSatan (which I ordered today and fortunately the NetUSBee wasn't sent yet so it'll be coming in one package ) on the way. Still need to get my 14mb ram upgrade and MiNT set up, then I want to start working on some software projects. I'm going to be probably attempting this rather soon myself. I'm still wanting to get my 32GB CF card formated to be able to use it for my Falcon with MiNT, and haven't quite figured out how to do that, was going to do it through Hatari, but doesn't seem to be working... But that's off topic, Much like a lot of things in TOS, you can just drag the .st or .msa file over to the image runner binary. At least that's' what that page shows. As I said, I haven't done it myself, just barely getting back into the Atari world, and have mostly been dealing with Amiga's, where they have their own built in way of doing this with Workbench 3.x (not sure if it's' in only 3.9+ or not, but I've seen it there).
