Aminet for Atari?

So, I am just getting back into the Atari scene after many moons, and having had my Amiga 4000D for a while, and online (the NetUSBee has been ordered) I'm wondering why there isn't really an Aminet for Atari computers. I see a few FTP sites still up, but nothing as extensive as Aminet, with a simple search and being able to split up what platform they are for, etc.

 

I'm no wizard at such things, but I know someone who I could probably talk into building up an interface for such a thing, and we could try, as a community to build upon it with piles of open source software. If I could ever get fiber in my area, I'd even be willing to host it. But as it is, it's cheap enough anymore I wouldn't mind paying for some VPS somewhere to host it.

 

Anyone interested in this?

You are right that there is no aminet for Atari but it's mainly for a reason. First of all, most projects have their own sites, or are hosted at Atariforge, sourceforge, github etc. There is the orphaned projects page as well, for projects that have been released by their authors and are looking for a maintainer.

 

If you are looking for a centralised location in order to find what you are looking for, the atari up to date list is as good a place to start as any.

Thanks a lot for that page, it's rather useful. Do we have a list somewhere of pages that contain things like this, current projects (hardware/software) etc?

The Atari Up to Date list also has links to the projects page. It's a good idea to mail the maintainer (Matthias iirc) for any broken links or information you want added.

I made something similar to AmiNet where people can add freely new (and old) Atari software, add screenshots, videos and descriptions... by drag&drop stuff to web site.

 

btw I just read how AmiNet works and I would say that my site works on similar way (create additional files around original Atari program archive).

 

If you have some new idea or suggestion for web site please let me know. I am also willing to share PHP scripts (complete code is less than 30KB) if someone is interest to expand functionality of web site. My original goal was to have some kind of software repository where TOS computer could pull whatever software user require.

Being a Debian guy at heart, I would love an 'apt-get install pagestream' or something. Granted, maybe that's a bad example since it's commercial (not sure if they allow the very old and non-updated version for the atari to be downloaded freely or not though, I know they still maintain the Amiga version.)

 

I wonder how feasible setting up something like that would be.

There is already something like that for games (although only if you have CosmosEx - http://joo.kie.sk/?page_id=384"downloading of floppy images using simple tool from internet directly to the device (something similar to some app store) – play old games just after few clicks")!

I am also curious to here from anybody how we could build something like apt-get for Atari...

 

btw does Aminet support something like apt-get or you need to manually download and install Applications?

Lotek, your archive is most impressive work ever done regarding archiving! Salut effort and time!

 

Maybe you could also build some website with screen shots and some additional infos about demo.

 

And maybe to see with jookie to include (support) downloading of demos directly from your FTP to Cosmosex (like games).

That CosmoEx looks awesome, maybe I should have concentrated on one of those instead of the UltraSatan, which passed through customs pretty quick, and left NY last night!

 

Aminet doesn't support something like apt-get either, but I always thought it'd be awesome. To me (and probably many others) it'd be far more worth while to run some simple commands to search and retrieve packages from a software repository, instead of hunting through the lists, finding one, extracting it, installing it, then finding out it doesn't work right or cover your needs, and then rinse and repeat.

 

Whereas with a nice command line set.

apt-cache search <subject>

apt-get install <package>

<play around with package>

apt-get remove (or purge) <package>

 

I actually can't stand using much of anything on Windows anymore due to the same hunt/pick/install/remove crap.

 

Ha, I really want to get the CosmoEx now. Hmm, I really need to get the MegaSTe and 1040ST working though....

Hi,

I just add new functionality to site: now you can add notes to programs (main purpose is for compatibility information but you can add whatever you want!)
