Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?

There's a fundamental problem with both of these suggestions: Mike owns the molds to making the plastic shells - but he has no ability to reproduce any of the internal components.

To even make a proof-of-concept, he'd have to do something like take apart an existing, working Jaguar, and put its internals into one of the newly molded shells.

And that's just crazy. :ponder:

Yeah, I can't imagine the Jaguar CD molds being useful in any meaningful way. Putting them in a museum seems like it would be the best way to help preserve some Jaguar history, since you don't often get to see molds like this.

Triverse and Dr Manhattan

I didn't know about that one. It looks like these scams are more common than i would imagine.

Anyway, this is the Phantom System i was talking about

So a famicom in an atari 7800 shell with genesis style controllers? God bless pirate consoles!

To all the new members on Atariage. You must check these archived threads out starring Backin89. These are a must read for great entertainment!

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/174216-need-donations-to-help-a-poor-dude/

Thanks! This one is my favorite, and probably the best one to start with, since it links back to the earlier ones.

(While we're "initiating" our new members, we should also explain: the avatar that backin89 used to have was a small picture of William Shatner as TJ Hooker. Funny Shatner pictures have been a running joke on AtariAge ever since.)

precisely hahah and it has more colors than the NES. We had another console like this with two different slots, one for famicom and another for NES games.

The story about this Phantom System is better than just a pirate stuff

I don't mean this as a bash against the guy but I could never ever take anything AlphaOmegaSin says seriously. He just reminds me of that hyperactive kid in middle school who really, really likes Metallica. Every video I watch just feels the same. Good on him for being successful on youtube, however.

I don't want to view him dissing/blaming Pat simply out of jealousy but it's a little hard not to.

I don't really have an opinion one way or the other regarding Gamester81. I wished I cared enough, lol.

I just wish I knew what Mike was thinking. They never had a prototype. He's not a tech guy (to my knowledge), he's more of a salesman and mouthpiece right? So why stick your neck out when you know you have nothing? Was this really, truly all a huge gamble for backing funds to actually get someome with knowledge to make a product? God, I hope not. That's a risk I couldn't even imagine taking. Even if so, it's 2016, why the consistent pictures of fake products, as if nobody will find out? You can't be THAT naive...

I just wish people would have stepped forward and asked for help or admitted partial defeat. Humility and honesty go a LONG way with me.

i knew it, you are selfaware now, you are skynet!

i havent seen anyone in this thread out for blood really, love the wording, now blaming this community and all the people that was sure it was a snes and then a dvr card if something happens to mike and the people involved? get real. While nobody here wishes any harm to Mike, if he sunks into depression or drinking, is all up to him if he decides to take that route. Let's hope he doesnt and man up to face what he brought it on himself.

took the words out of my mouth

go back to the suicide joke early on or the post going after his family or those calling for Kennedy to be prosecuted for fraud, on neogaf with their unending brilliance and empathy for all humanity are drawing up all sorts of psychological profiles about how Kennedy is basically a sociopath. All I see is a guy that had an idea that he was too enthusiastic for, was under prepared but over sold it and tried to buy time to make it work. His magazine and game gavel as seem on the level, why would he suddenly go con man? Nothing about this strikes me as a terrible person, seems like a Preston Tucker situation. As far as the silence, I'm not sure how well Kennedy handles criticism but I'd imagine this is getting really hard on him.

Whoa, that Phantom clone, I somehow hadn't seen that before. Made me do a double take with that 7800 case!

This thread made me remember of this console because it's story is kinda interesting.

Gradiente (the company behind the Phantom) was trying to get a license to distribute the Atari products officially around here. They had the mold for the 7800 shell, but as the NES became a giant and Atari was sinking in popularity (Sega was big here too), the company tried to approach Nintendo to distribute the NES here in Brazil, but it didn't work at the time (they eventually became the official distributor of Nintendo products around here when the SNES came out).

Having the 7800 shells, Gradiente knew the market was interested on the NES, and as famiclones were common around here, they just inserted famicom boards inside of 7800 shells (now you see the connection, another Nintendo board inside of an Atari shell), and used the Genesis controllers that were also common around here.

I check all the Samsung and Toshiba DVD players when I go to thrift store hoping to get a Nuon.

Haven't found one yet, but I did get a Phillips CD-I.

I have gone on many a Nuon hunt over the years. I have found a few. It is interesting that most people (pawn shops for instance) put them in the pile of DVD players for $10. I was on a Nuon hunt late last year and found a working Fairchild Channel F complete with carts 4 through 21 or something. They had it marked $25. I was looking at it and the lady running the yardsale came over and said "$10" for it. I told her it is worth much much more, I would feel bad not giving her at least $25 for it. She wouldn't hear of it, took $10 and left. It was at a church yard sale event so I mailed a money order for 10% of the sale price to that church (it sold for $150 plus shipping before I got home).

Anyone find the end of that yellow brick road yet?

RETRO is certainly not "on the level". The magazine was nothing like what was promised and they've had nothing but problems getting issues out, with no communication to their backers.

Very interesting indeed! Thanks for sharing. So Mike actually isn't the first one to have the idea to create a console starting with an old Atari shell?!

Maybe he would have had better luck if he launched the Coleco Chameleon in Brazil!

actually missed that joke, this thread is too active is easy to miss stuff when you have work to do, comeback and omg 10 new pages. i dont mind joking (myself hve done that a lot here, i guess im on of those close to be banned from the topic, or the boards) but dont joke about suicide or threats to him and/or family, that i dont find cool. Just as someone was trying to make fun for how Mike talks with the right side of his mouth, commented i wont speak ill or mock about that, as could be facial paralysis.

Cant say or defend the community of NeoGAF, i avoid that place as if it was the black plague. Full of morons and what you said reflects that.

The funny thing is that the company who made the clone likely had the case made for a small fraction of the price Mike paid for the Jaguar molds.

Nah, the retrogaming scene around here is more focused on the period of time between the Famicom and the PS1. I guess he would have a hard time trying to convince people to go back to cartridges in a place where digital distribution and emulation are so widespread. Edited by raz

It seems weird that atari kept these and the 7800 molds. Seems like all other companies must melt them down when done with them as I have never heard of any others popping up. My guess is what's happening here is the main reason for not keeping them around.
