Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?

I wrote a article for RETRO in issue #1 and #2 and then called it quits. Like Pat said in his video, the current editor would wait until the night before the deadline to tell you to redo your article after having over a month to tell you this. I chalk it up as a ploy to get rid of writers they did not want. Did not matter to me as they would not let me write what I wanted, they were fixated on modern games and not retro games. My original idea for my article was to talk about a classic arcade game, then discuss all the ports from the early days of videogaming up to modern consoles. kind of like I do now on my Arcade USA channel when I cover a classic arcade game. Pipercub from RGRU told me he had been told my stuff was not that good by RETRO magazine which explains the tactic to wait to the last minute to have me make changes to frustrate me into quitting. Granted, I am a amateur at writing and don't consider myself a writer, just like to talk about my favorite subject Arcades and Videogames!

Willie, I really enjoyed your contributions, so F them effers! If you really want do this kind of stuff, there are plenty of places that would love to have your contribution, from gaming sites to something like the Retroist, which gets lots of traffic and is very accepting of contributions.

Currently I have been invited over to Gamester81.com and have been doing articles over there :), would love to do stuff for the retroist (first podcast I ever subscribed to), but I barely have time to do my youtube show, podcasts and now articles for the Gamerster81 site to take on more :). I also did a little for the Retro Gaming Times Magazine that just recently came back that has a interview with me in it.

I've seen stores selling what I'd describe as "very obviously dumb phones" with nothing but number keys and call/hangup byttons so I guess there is a market for it! :)

Most people age 65+

Rogers Communications actually sells a "Senior's Phone" with minimal features, high-contrast buttons, and an extra large font size. My Mother has one.

Maybe he'll sell adapters which plug your Cell Phone into classic game systems to play Zenergy games off of?

This Zenergy thing makes no sense. If I learned anything from Kennedy, it was CARTRIDGES.

Yeah, Coleco 'WANTED' a fast way in, Time is Money, but, we should give them the requested feedback.

Thanks for posting that. I sure hope that this time around, "input from the community" doesn't mean "someone who did all the work and made a thing that we can slap COLECO on."

I wonder why they don't seem to be looking into making new software? That seems less risky.

Yeah, Programming... it doesn't just happen. So, again, Minicades look like they can happen at least. I see lots of minicade clones on the market now.

Its just Chris and Mark, there are no manufacturing facilities or programmers. Software would have to be done the same way that you dont like, someone else does it and Coleco puts the brand on it. But, cant make everyone happy :). Just happy they are wanting the input from the community.

Mr Lee?

Red Herring

This is a red herring, but I couldn't resist posting. It comes from "one of the largest manufacturer of prototypes and small-volume PCB in China":

Echo Wang? That sounds like a great hacker name.

That's the name of my tech-porn channel.

Ecco the Dolphin pr0n kaxx? :P

@findingmrlee You guys do realise that "Lee" is an extremely common Asian name, also fairly popular in the west. There will be ten thousand red herrings before you hit jackpot.

Regardless of when it happened, it's very hypocritical of Mike "Mortal Kennedy" Kombat to be involved in both mobile games and hawk cartridges as the only way things should be. I retract any goodwill I gave him for his starting moves in the RetroVGS. There was no hint of passion project in there, it was purely a predatory marketing stance. From that perspective, I doubt he's feeling any sort of personal pain of losing out on something he really wanted to see come to fruition. It's just some opportunistic idea he cooked up and he'll move quickly to the next.

I'm thinking of something way earlier, and in the original black case, just cut short. Like the dingy Adam that Rupan3 posted.

In this 2006 thread about "the best is yet to come" Colecovision hardware speculations! Also mention of ColecoVision in an FPGA.

Man seeing that makes me want to take my spare coleco and put it on the old tablesaw. Be easy enough to make a panel to cover the open end. I tablesawed a couple 5200s into choppers and was amazed at how well the plastic held up.

For someone that describes himself as an entrepreneur through and through he doesn't have a very successful track record. I can certainly admire a persons desire to dream big, but surely it should be clear even to Mike that he does not have the skills required to lead these ventures.

I wouldn't necessarily pass judgment on someone for several failed ventures. Startup culture is replete with stories of people who have failed several times, learned from it, and eventually some strike it rich.

No. I judge MK for being a liar and overall very shady.

Somehow I always seemed to be behind by about 20 pages or so in this thread, but now it's finally starting to slow down a bit. As of late, I'm starting at the end and working my way back LOL.

I will say I was a fan of Gamegavel; More the idea than the execution. Then I was a fan of RETRO magazine; Again more the idea than the execution. And the Idea of a cartridge based system? Well I would have been behind that too if it had been done right. It's a real shame Mike did what he did, and I agree with everyone it would be nice of him to get on here and take some responsibility, and maybe apologize to Everyone.

I don't see it happening, but it would sure be nice.

I Definitely look forward to Coleco Minicades existing again in some form...

Sorry to ramble...Thanks to Everyone's epic posts...I have been quite entertained.

Very true. There is certainly no shame in learning from ones mistakes, but I don't think that's the case here. Look at Parcel Gamer; it looks like there was more interest in handing out fancy titles than setting up the distribution and sale of used games.

After eight years chasing alternate avenues of the same market you would expect to see more knowledge. Instead we have the same poor communications, lack of respect for the community and failure to provide real leadership over a project. Real leadership means talking responsibility instead of blaming others.

In the end this has lead to the Chameleon project, which, as you said, has shown Kennedy to be a liar willing to use and dispose of people at will. Given that these are the actions of a person with plenty of business experience I think he has earned the judgements and ire he is currently receiving.

That guy is an epic hack, he called CGE Adventures a confusing bunch of turns that end in dead ends, it's a MAZE GAME asshole.

Cool with edits by mods if that is too direct.

I don't know if he is an "epic hack" just because he didn't really enjoy your game...but I do know he can rub people the wrong way. I enjoy him for what he does, but I don't always agree with him.

Many failures before success are reasonable business models, but are crowded out or aren't experienced enough to run internal affairs optimally.

What Mike has created, even with his experience, starts with nonsensical business models. He has dreams of legions of customers where the market will only sustain a handful.

I think in the end, Mike Kennedy was just an ideas guy.

Sorry, There Is No "Idea Guy" Position In The Game Industry

Mike Kennedy could not code. He obviously did not know anything about hardware. He could not make even a simple game, or even produce a decent marketing campaign. He obviously did have some skills in producing a community of gamers to support his previous ventures, but he did a poor job nurturing that.
