7800Lover
Has anyone ever played Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on Genesis? I rented this when it came out and could never get past the second level. A friend of mine played it and did better as he had played Puyo Puyo, the game that this was based on. I know have Mean Bean Machine on my PS2 Sonic Mega Collection game and have tried to beat it. I made it as far as the fifth level but it is hard even on its easiest settings. It's possible for an opponent losing to stage a sudden comeback and trounce you. What do you think? Do you find this game addictive or frustrating? Torr
I have it on Game Gear... As a Columns/Tetris style game, it's very... boring... The Quest mode? Where you must beat AI oppenents in a 2-Player style game by rigging combos and droppng shit on them to hinder them seems like it COULD be fun, but I just can't get the rythm to string together good combos... maybe I just suck at it!!! Algus
I dislike Match 3 games. I've got it on, umm Genesis 6-Pak? Sonic 3-Pak? Some compilation...I don't have the stand alone cart. The AI is actually fairly tough. I haven't played it heavily enough to determine if its because the AI is good or the levels are just stacked against you. triverse
I love it. I have played it quite a bit since release in various forms. At first I was not a fan of it, nor this style of puzzle game in general. I got into it via another game that licensed the engine- Kirby's Avalanche on the Super Nintendo. Try that version, if you are having trouble getting into Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, it may be easier to get into.
jbone09
Beat it back in the day; still have a copy laying around. It's definitely a fun puzzle game, in that Puyo Puyo style. I personally prefer a good game of Dr. Mario. Both solid games though.
obsoleteJACK
I liked it. Never played Puyo Puyo, but enjoyed Mean Bean Machine quite a bit. Developed several strategies over the years, that would seem to work better against different opponents.
NE146
I used to play the quest modes of Puyo Puyo (genesis and arcade versions) as well as Mean Bean Machine quite a bit.. using save states to get through the stages. Like a lot of falling puzzle games, many times luck has a lot to do with how well you do. Still fun though.
7800Lover
I used to play the quest modes of Puyo Puyo (genesis and arcade versions) as well as Mean Bean Machine quite a bit.. using save states to get through the stages. Like a lot of falling puzzle games, many times luck has a lot to do with how well you do. Still fun though. I know what that's like. It's quite common for your opponent to be losing and then stage a sudden comeback to beat you! Still though, I feel compelled to try and beat the opponent.
+atari2600land
I have the Game Gear version. I usually just play for the highest score and not vs. a computer opponent when one is available. So games like Puzzle Boble Vs. for the N-Gage I wouldn't play since there doesn't seem to be an option for going solo.
Austin
Really fun game, but honestly, I really only enjoy playing it with a real second player. It makes for a great versus game.
+Black_Tiger
I'm not a fan of puzzle games, but I dislike the Dr Robotnik re-branding and very much prefer the orignal Puyo Puyo/Madou Monogatari theme. The overall aesthetics and artwork were what got me to give Puyo Puyo a serious try after snubbing Mean Bean Machine for so long.
Gabriel
Since this thread has been quiet for a while, hopefully this won't be a threadcrap. I first played Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Xbox 360. This occurred during the very brief window when I was worrying about Achievements in games. I decided I was going to get 1000/1000 for that disc. That meant I had to fulfill some requirement on Mean Bean Machine. I think it was "complete the game" or something. I now LOATHE Mean Bean Machine. There are games I will never play again, and Mean Bean Machine is one of them. I know it's a common hyperbolic statement to say that you'd rather die than do something, but if an armed crazy person came into my home and told me that I could either get killed immediately or have to play Mean Bean Machine again, I'd have to seriously think on that choice. I really hate that game now. Even thinking about it for this post makes me want to punch something. It makes me sick just the merest concept of it. If Sega set out to create a game that just makes people violent by the merest thought of it, then they succeeded beyond the wildest hopes with Mean Bean Machine. To hell with that game.
Nutsy Doodleheimer
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is a fair game and not as fun as Columns, Tetris, and Dr. Mario when it comes to puzzle games. I played the story mode a few times and got to the 4th opponent and I just quit after many times of losing. The game builds too much pressure and I don't have the quick reflexes on where to place the beans to their corresponding colors. Austin said it correct. It's fun to play with a human opponent. I just can't get into the story/quest mode.
NE146
If I remember for some reason Mean Bean Machine quest was harder than Puyo Puyo's (original & part 2). However this is a true story.. I finished both games with just button mashing Drop em down quick, randomly spin. Yeah often you'll lose but eventually you'll get lucky and get a great combo to finish off the computer opponent to move onto the next one. Tadaa game finished. An easier way of getting the Mean Bean Machine Achievement is to put a code in that jumps you directly to the final level against Robotnik himself, and from there make judicious use of saves. It'll still be a challenging Achievement to get, but it is absolutely manageable.
+chicgamer
The angriest I have ever made a friend of mine was playing Mean Bean Machine against her. She seriously still gets peeved if I even bring up that game. I think I beat her fifteen times in a row. She was furious. I wasn't very good at the single-player mode. I also played this on the Sonic XBox 360 compilation, and it didn't take me long to give up on the Mean Bean Machine achievement.
G-type
This was one of the games I used to most frequently play on emulator. I got pretty far in it. I now have it on cartridge and for the 360 collection. I like it a lot. Playing against the AI and watching what they do is a good way to learn strategies to get better. +Cafeman
BUMP of thread. I've been playing Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on X360 Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Oh what a frustrating battle, but I finally beat the quest mode and beat Dr. Robotnik's level, and got the achievement. I think it is programmed well, with good visuals, gameplay (in concept), and music. but it is just so frustrating! Every time I beat an opponent, I did a save state. I estimate I must have played and lost some stages at least 50 times before beating them. I did start to get better skills - recognizing when to rotate one way vs the other - but this game is HARD! I bet it made kids cry back in the day. It just gets too fast. Many times, I was doing well but made 1 mistake and that was the end - the opponent did a miraculous comeback and defeated me. I felt I didn't have enough time to mentally think and build a good combo; instead I was often just trying to survive, playing more on the defense. Then you have the art. Uglier "Sonic" characters there have never been. It is satisfying to see their defeated pictures though. So, just sharing the frustration but also the conquest of beating it. I never played the original Compile Puyo Puyo, but anybody know if it is also this difficult?
2600problems
I question Sega's logic of adding it to the ultimate genesis collection, let alone requiring a trophy to beat it. the road rash trilogy would've been a better fit
