Welcome to Season 13 of the Atari 8-bit High Score Club!

You know the drill by now... Everyone welcome to play, just post a score and that's it! Screenshots optional. We usually play a game over a 2 week period starting on a Sunday. Emulator users welcome. Checkout the beginners' guide for more details, or post if you need any help at all.

Though this is the High Score Club you don't need to be high nor good at the games to play, it's more about exploring the games and seeing if we can find anything interesting. I like to squeeze in a few new ones to support the current programmers. However if you want some competition then you can be sure there will be someone who can beat you at your favourite game ;)

You can also read about the high score club in the first couple of issues of Pro© Magazine which I would encourage you all to support. I'm a contributor but it's atariage's powersoft (Markus) who produces the only paper based Atari 8-bit Magazine... in the world! Plus it's cheap too (available in English or German) :)

So let's get things started - suggest 5 games you would like to play, if they are the same as other peoples choices that is ok as it helps me see what is what. There will be a poll for each round. Scoring will be similar to last season:12pts for a win down to 1pt for 12th place, with extra scoring positions for more players.

I'll handle everything so just play and enjoy your Atari, don't be shy, join in, speak out, discuss the game picked, suggest any bonus games or special rounds or post any related links to the current game.

Have fun

trbb

My five game suggestions this round:

  1. Drelbs (1983) (Synapse Software)
  2. Moon Shuttle (1983) (Datamost)
  3. Protector II (1982) (Synapse Software)
  4. Survivor (1982) (Synapse Software)
  5. Cloudburst (1982) (DANA)

Plus, one more suggestion-- maybe as a bonus game one round this season...

  1. Salmon Run (1982) (APX, Bill Williams)

I always enjoy the new games that are created by homebrewers.  Sprinkle those in as needed-- even if most of them tend not to work great on NTSC machines.  Luckily, the Atari 8-Bit may very well have one of the best emulators ("Altirra") available for any computer platform!

As always, please throw in some BASIC type-in games if they seem interesting.  Or weird.  Or even plain terrible.

I'm back!

I missed the first poll and HSC13 has already begun but I'd like to make a request.

I lost interest in HSC because we seemed to be playing the same games year after year.  There are probably a couple of thousand A8 games that I've never played. I might have fired most of them up to take a look but that is all.   I need motivation to play some of them.

Here's my suggestion.   Keep the pool of games going but instead of an election make it a drawing.  Each player puts in 5 games they would like to play into the pool (all 5 picks for the same game allowed if the player desires).  For each contest one game (and a bonus game?) is drawn out of the pool.

Leave all the picks in the pool for the next drawing.

The odds are against me but I would have a chance of getting one of my picks played

At the very least I'd be motivated to fire up and try some games before casting my votes.

I sympathize with you. I don't play new games without motivation. When I say "new" games, I'm referring to games that are new to me.  I've only played in the Atari 8-Bit HSC for the last couple of years, and this past season was the first time I played every game and every round.  I've looked at the games played over the years, and they do seem to be cycled through on a semi-regular basis.  There's a good reason for this: good games are a known quantity.  We enjoy playing them.  Just like re-watching a favorite movie, there is something very comforting about re-playing a favorite game.  It takes effort to discover (well, to play) new games.

Whether a game is from 1982 or 2016-- if you've never played it before, then it's new.  Part of the joy that I've discovered in the HSC is that even games that we think we know, we don't really know well until we dig into them.  Such was the case with "Donkey Kong Junior" this last season.  I've always been fond of that game... but playing it again and again (and never actually getting better at it, sad to say!) made me see deeper into it's mechanics.  I could actually see more.  "Donkey Kong Junior" is certainly not a new game to me-- I even have fairly fond memories of playing the game in the early 80s.  However, the game became new when I dived into it and really tried to play it to the best of my ability.

That's the genius of playing for a high score.  It's not about the score; it's about the goal of attaining a score.  Any score.  Your best score.  Throughout the High Score Club season I've discovered that previously-played games and new games all merge into one category: a fun way to share a passion for classic gaming with other like-minded players.

New or old, good or bad, poor graphics or amazing effects, the results are the same when we're all sharing the experience.  So, forget about the score and focus on the playing, for the fun lies deep within us.
