Does anybody know approximately how large is the TI community? 10's 100's 1000's of active users?

Davvel,

That is a good and interesting question! It's a little hard to take a current census of 'active' TI users because of Lurkers and little pockets of foreign speaking users from places like South America and Europe that do not make their presence known here at Atari Age. There are a few people who hang out in other places like the Yahoo site and since I've never been a Facebook person I have no clue how many different users may be there.

To make an 'educated guess' one would have to ask for more input I suppose. For starters, << this old poll >> can instantly bring the number to 64. But then again we would have to also ask people like Ciro how many people belong to his group in Italy as well a people who attend the group in Austria and other places.

If I were to make a "GUESSTIMATE" I'd say between 70 & 150 currently active users, not all at Atari Age, but I could easily be way off!

Anyone one else want to come in an help narrow the numbers down a bit for Davvel?

Another good gauge of user activity is the number of folks that have bought things off of eBay lately. There are always a lot of bidders on stuff--and most of it hasn't gone to users on AtariAge. Zach has sold almost 100 PEBs in the last two years. . .and a goodly number of us didn't need another one, so a lot of those went to folks with little or no contact here. Jaime has sold several hundred CF7/NanoPEB devices, which is another good indicator. About 80 people bought one of the 2048K cartridges. The interesting thing is, the community is a lot larger than the visible pockets of activity. I would put the number of people who still use their TI in some fashion at about 1,000--but a lot of those are severely isolated or possibly on the Yahoo! or Facebook groups.

I think we strict the definition of active TI Users too strict to those working on some project and those following those projects and providing public feedback.

With this we exclude persons like my nephew, who is 9 years old, and likes to play his 99/4a or try his first steps in TI Basic.

There might be plenty of people simply enjoying turning up their old system or showing them to their kids and get the next generation into it.

We exclude persons, who might only collect and play the original 99 stuff without paying attention to what is going on nowadays.

The TI-99 has changed from being relevant for your business to only being a hobby, therefore it's not necessary to run your system every day for being called active User.

You never needed the internet on the TI-99, therefore people might not have started yet to think about searching the net when they do the hobby.

Further for some percentage of Users the reason for keeping to the 99/4a reflects ones personality in terms of not liking changes, not wanting to adapt, having no motivation to relearn. Therefore at least some percentage of Usere might not have Internet at all yet for the very same reaons, because you would have to adapt, change and learn.
