The jitter implies dirty POTs that need to be cleaned.

 

If your joysticks work correctly in the left and right directions then the fire button issue is within the paddle controllers - either the button itself or the wiring/connection to the Atari.

 

 

If you're not able to resolve it look into getting a set of At Game paddles for the Flashback units. They're brand new, so jitter free, and work great with a real Atari. Looks like they're on back order though, might be able to find them elsewhere.

Thanks, I will see if I can give them a good cleaning.

 

Any idea why the controller seemed to work better the more I used it? Maybe I was scraping off some grime as I went along?
