Worst racing games?

I have to say I have played a lot of racing games but not until recently have I played Sonic R and it trumps all the worst racing experiences I have ever had. It does have one hell of a soundtrack though. What racing games do you feel is just as bad if not worse?

One awful racer that stands out in my memory is Spirit of Speed 1937 for Dreamcast. Though I owned the DC, my roommates and I all played it and one of them (who was/is a big racing game fan) actually bought it new. We all hated it! I'm just glad I'm not the one who wasted his money on it. The game is slow and controls are clunky and unwieldy. Easily one of the worst DC games. In fact, I'd say it is -the- worst if I had to pick. Give me Hydro Thunder or Speed Devils any day.

Race Drivin' for the SNES and don't say I didn't warned you! The 1/2 frame per second animation, boxy vehicles, horrible controls, and sounds like you shit your pants when your car crashes and blows up. Not to mention a few stunts that are WTF!?!?

WTF?

It's a copy of Stunts 4D Sports Driving on PC! A bad one, with the lazy wheel turning and slow framerate, but it's the same design, and even the stunts are looking alike :

Well okay I guess there isn't a million way to make a low-poly 3D racing game, but still it baffles me that the games looks so close, even in the menu. I wonder if it's mroe than a shameless copy...

(and Stunts is an EXCELLENT game, not a bad one)

In fairness to Race Drivin', it's the sequel to Hard Drivin' which came out before Stunts. So if anything, Stunts was influenced by Hard Drivin'. However, Stunts = awesome, while Race Drivin' on SNES = garbage.

Edit: Also I wouldn't put Sonic R up there as one of the worst driving games. It's average at best, but far from one of the worst.

1. Give Sonic R some time. I found it to be pretty good after getting over the initial shock of the graphics and strange controls.

2. Stunts 4D Sports Driving is Definitely a PC clone of the Hard Driving Series.

I'm stretching my mind on the subject of bad racing games. The first thing that comes to my mind is Automobili Lamborghini on N64. It was just a snooze.

Ah, well thanks for correcting me ;)

I kind of liked sonic R--really only with knuckles, though, the rest of the bunch seemed unplayable to me. It moved quickly, and looked good. Track layouts were just plain stupid until they were memorized, though.

I will third(?) snes race drivin' though. I tried pretty hard to think up terrible racers that people would have actually heard of, and then when I got my mental list together, I scrolled down and race drivin' just destroys my whole list.

Problem with Sonic R was that it was BOTH a racing game AND a 3-D platformer... at the same time... somehow...

Which REALLY is the way a Sonic game SHOULD be.

It had 3D platforming elements of exploration, but mixed with Sonic's gameplay style style of speed ruling overall.

In THEORY it should have worked... but... didn't...

At least not in my eyes...

THIS should have been when Sega realized having Sonic tear through a game level as fast as he could was a cool gimmick, but not something to build a multidecade franchise out of. But then again, Sonic games keep selling, so what do I know??

I've played some mediocre racing games in my day, but can't really remember any horrible ones. They all have some aspect making them worth playing for a while.

Sonic R is more a platforming / exploring racing game. I like the game overall, but it doesn't have much content, and I can beat it unlocking all characters and tracks within a couple evenings of playing it. Its fun finding the coins, shortcuts, and emeralds and then trying to grab an emerald while still coming in first place. It could have used twice as many courses though.

Once I'm familiar with the levels and coin locations, I can start new and complete the game entirely in one evening. Too short, and it isn't fun enough to warrant any reason to replay a lot. Oh well.

Nintendo did it with a guy that just jump, Namco with a yellow ball that eat dots...

Because it's a simple gameplay doesn't mean it's a wrong idea to make up for it.

The problm with Sonic is that Sega Japan and Sega of America wanted the character to evolve in different directions. The Japanese one was and still is a cheerful and cocky character, but for SOA, in the good olde "true heroes are badasses" fashion that plague US gaming, Sonic went from cocky to arrogant.

Those disputes over just everything it parlty what lead Sega to vanish from the market - they were unable to have a coherent publishing and release plan between their largerst/more profitable market (and they forgot to listen to their most faithful market - Europe).

Sonic R is a prime example - Nintendo had a Rally game, so Sega had to have a rally game, no matter what... and doesn't matter if the gameplay blows, as long as it has Sonic, it's racing and include stuff from the classic games : it's what everyone wants right?

Turbo for the 2600. It's too bad Coleco carts were sacrificed for this wretched game. I'm glad I was able to sell my copy. No fun playing this game.

That is bad. Looking at the gameplay video I would dare say Night Driver is superior to Turbo.

I'll add a 2nd to Hard Drivin' on the SNES. I picked it up at the local retro game store and returned it a few days later. It was simply unplayable. Part of me wonders if there is a good home port of Race Drivin'/Hard Drivin'. I heard the Genesis/Mega Drive version was good, but never heard much good about any of the other home releases.
