What Are Your Favorite PlayStation 2 Games?

Recommended Posts

Even to this day, the PlayStation 2 is my favorite home console. After all, the PS2 had thousands of games to choose from, a DVD player and backwards compatibility with the original PlayStation, among other amazing features. I still own dozens of PlayStation 2 games in my collection, but I know I missed several games a lot of people are passionate about (I never got to the play Persona 4, Ratchet & Clank, Timesplitters, Sly and Disgaea.) So apart from sharing some of my favorite titles, I encourage you to share yours. It's never too late to play some of those classics.

Top 10: My Favorite PlayStation 2 Games

I absolutley enjoy the PS2! When it comes to the modern era of gaming, the PS2 delivered the goods when it came to quality games and building a tremendous library. Here are some of mine.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: GTA Vice City is my all time favorite Playstation 2 game and my personal choice for the best GTA game in the series. Rockstar nailed what life was like in 1986/1987. The outfits, cars, radio stations, atmosphere, and the way people talked and acted. An absolutley fun game that will make you lose track of time.

Capcom Classics Volume 1 and 2: Being a huge fan of the Capcom arcade classics from the mid 80's to early 90's these titles are a steal for the price and a must have for your library. They offer some of the best arcade ports and some excellent unlockables. One of the best compilation games out there.

Jak and Daxter: A great spinoff of the Crash Bandicoot series. You control Jak and Daxter provided comedy relief. So much to explore with fun and adventurous missions and mystery areas. Other than the gameplay the graphics for the game is some of the best on the system.

Guitar Hero: Yup. You gotta go with the game that started it all over a decade ago. It gives you control of what it's like to perform at a club or a huge arena in front of screaming fans. I am amazed at how the songs sound like their real life counterparts. Career mode is fun but playing head to head with a buddy is what delivers the fun!

I just pulled up my old spreadsheet and noticed I own 162 games for the PS2. This is second only to the 2600. Here are a few of my top favorites:

GTA Vice City - I wish they would do another one set in the 80's, the music was so much better than the new versions.

Katamari Damacy - one of the great quirky Japanese games released on the system

All of the retro collections - Midway/Namco/Activision/Atari/Capcom/Intellivision/Taito

The Ratchet and Clank games - The writing was extremely funny in those first games

It's been a while, so taking a trip down memory lane here's a couple games that stick out:

Devil May Cry - this was the first game to make me really glad I got a ps2

God of War - just a cool action/adventure all around

Final Fantasy X - didn't like the characters as much, but loved the combat

Katamari Damacy - fun and weird

Sega Genesis Collection - loved that some arcade games were also included

I have a PS2 myself(one of the older models). But just why is this thread in CLASSIC GAMING General? Why not Modern Gaming? The last console that is to be considered classic gaming is either the N64 or the Dreamcast, to me at least.

PSS you bring up a good point. I went to Modern Gaming before posting this and didn't find the PS2 name anywhere, so I just assumed I could post it here. Where should I post something like this next time?

I still own most of these, but I never got around to playing Katamari Damacy. That game looked quirky and weird, but I never came across a copy, so I completely forgot about it. Maybe I should change that...

I didn't include any of these games on my personal list, but even then, I have to agree that those are some fantastic PS2 titles. I loved the atmosphere in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and I often find myself thinking about parts of that game (the soundtrack was fantastic in my opinion.) Also, Guitar Hero was such an innovative rhythm game back when it came out and I had a terrific time playing it. If I remember correctly, those were all covers, but that was such an entertaining game.

It's been so long since I've really played PS2 games... I have a few that I remember pretty clearly, but I sit and try to think of PS2 games, and I think of PS1 games and have to say to myself, "No, that was the PS1... now what was there for the PS2?" The PS2 had tons of games, but there are only a few that stick out to me...

God of War II - I remember playing this when it was still pretty new and being amazed. It seemed to be such a leap ahead in ... well... everything. I remember telling my wife, "Hey, come look at this!" Of course she didn't really care... anyway, I recently came back and played it again, and couldn't get back into it. Not sure why, but there it is.

Final Fantasy X - I liked this game quite a bit... but I HATE Blitzball. I know some people did nothing but play Blitzball, but I never won a single game and just couldn't get into it at all. I never finished the game... maybe I'll come back to it and start it over and try to finish it. I only HAVE to play Blitzball once... and I only have to hear that awkward fake laughing scene once...

Gran Turismo 3 ASpec - I got this game with my PS2. I had owned, played, and loved Gran Turismo 1 and 2, and 3 was just more of it all. Great graphics and racing.

Grand Theft Auto 3 - I never played the originals on PS1, and didn't play the others on PS2 (Vice City, San Andreas), so I didn't have anything else to compare it to. I couldn't get some mission about three quarters of the way into the game (had to drive by shoot a certain number of rival gang members in a time limit), but that never stopped me from playing. I spent HOURS just goofing off, running around shooting people, stealing cars and seeing what I could jump off of or over... my first true sandbox game. I loved it.

People seem to like a very wide range of genres. The vast bulk of my PS 2 collection consists of RPGs and the various compilation disks (e.g. Atari, Intellivision, Genesis, Arcade games), together with a small number of strategy games.

I have really no interest in racing, sports, survival-horror, music, or FPS titles. I do have GTA 3 (and Vice City), but I have hardly played the story mode for either -- I like to use the cheats and just wander around the neighbourhood wrecking havoc and chaos.

Honestly, it's a grey area. Unless Al comes along and specifies where 'classic' starts, I think here is fine. I mean... the PS2 came out almost 16 years ago. People who got as kids, could/do have kids of their own. I think that's arguably classic. (Although I hate to admit it, makes me feel old. :P)

Anyway- as my avatar would suggest, I do love Klonoa 2. I played it at a store kiosk, liked it, then stumbled across it at a flea market. I think it's one of the best executions of a 2D platformer in a 3D space I've ever run into. I also second Ico/Shadow of the Colossus and Katamari Damacy series- excellent, excellent games.

I don't really think 'good' is the right word... but Mister Mosquito is certainly unique. I've never played another mosquito simulator.

Champions of Norrath: Realms of Everquest FTW.

Lately I've been thinking/reminiscing about playing those games from the PS2's 1st few years (2001-2003) esp. Drakkan, XTreme G3 (excellent visual rain effects on the city level), Pirates: Legend of Black Kat. These were the last games I played & enjoyed before gaming took a major "wrong turn" IMO.

Persona 3 and 4

FFX

God of War I/II

Katamari Damacy

Okami

Champions of Norrath

Sly Cooper II

Ratchet and Clank

Devil May Cry 3

Onimusha 3

Shadow of the Colossus

I actually liked one of the Castlevania games, the one where you have a familiar that tags along to help. Konami dropped the ball on Suikoden but Suikoden III wasn't too bad. I also like GTA III, Shadow Hearts and this wierd pinball game called FlipNic.

Lots of other games I forget or haven't played yet. Rez and some other games are on there I never actually played. The Taito collections are great along with all the other arcade stuff. Anyone remember Activision Anthology? :P

Awesome games, my friend played Everquest for a long time on PS2. Drakkan is a hidden gem. Loved that.

Yep back before Real Life took over, I had time for more lengthy games. Now I'll just check out gameplay vids on YT to get my fix. Not the right way to go about it but the only way I can.

But Champs of Norrath, I've kept all along, must've played thru that 5x now with the various characters.

Been thinking about buying Pirates: LoBK again, although I never beat it, & I recall getting bored of it toward the end. Just sailing around visiting islands in that game was fun.

Also I played lots of M games before we had kids. Now it's not such a big deal, theyre old enough to play games now, though it's usually PS3 Minecraft or ipad games before a game of PS2 co-op Gauntlet or TMNT.

I had so many PS2 games I never got to: Sphinx, MA:GITS, Mark of Kri, I did finish Warhammer 40K, though FPS arent my jam (& I blame them for ruining gaming for me) I'd need to see a list to name any more- thats my point, they were forgettable.

A couple sports games I liked were Splashdown, & Summer Heat Beach Volleyball, which got poor reviews but I really got into it. I was always "BRRRADLEYYY STEWARRRT!" & I loved that beach house. Always though about building an ACTUAL beach house like it- if I were rich & lived on the coast.

I loved Bloodrayne. I recall one day I rented Bounty Hunter & Bloodrayne, unfamiliar with the latter;; I really wanted to try BH, which became a confusing, brightly colored mess. I was pleasantly surprised with Bloodrayne though. Never tried the sequel(s).

I couldn't help but noticing that a lot of people mentioned Katamari Damacy here and I never played that. Maybe I'll track down a copy, but does anybody know if Beautiful Katamari for the Xbox 360 is any good?

It appears to be very similar to the other titles. Since you are just rolling a ball around that picks up objects I don't know what they could do to change the gameplay. Its a very quirky game that is very easy to learn and difficult to put down and has a great replay factor. Things stick to the ball based on the size of the ball. Meaning as the ball grows so does its ability to pick up larger objects. Also odd shaped things make the ball more harder to move around. The music and plot also compete for which one is either completely annoying or absolute genius.

Most of the Katamari games play pretty much the same- roll ball, get stuff. The biggest 'issue' with Beautiful Katamari is the 360 controller. The game uses the dual analog sticks for control, and the fact that the ones on the 360 aren't lined up with each other changes how the game feels. It just works a little better on a Playstation controller. It's not bad though, hardly your worst option (That would be Me & My Katamari on PSP). If you've never played before, you won't likely be bothered by it at all.

If you can get cheap copies, though, start with the oldest Katamari you can... just to watch the King of All Cosmos get more and more flamboyant each game. :-D

Beautiful Katamari is $5 on Xbox Live as part of a Namco Sale, so that's why I was asking. Getting a PS2 version of a Katamari game is unfortunately not an option right now. Thanks for the brief explanation about the series!
