I don't know how the HSC is run in other communities, but the way I saw it ran here during its hayday is one game per week or fortnight. You can announce the lineup for the season early to get people interested and planning, and perhaps a big blowout at the end (though I am not a fan of those).

Here are some of the fun scoring games I'd like to see:

  • Atlantis
  • He-Man
  • Night Stalker
  • Worm Whomper
  • Shark! Shark!
  • TRON Deadly Discs
  • BurgerTime
  • Pac-Man
  • Thin Ice
  • Beauty & The Beast
  • Demon Attack
  • Centipede
  • Dracula
  • Diner
  • Hover Force

And of course, perhaps even some of the most popular home-brews:

  • DK Arcade
  • D2K
  • Ms. Pac-Man
  • Space Patrol (though not many people have it)
  • That Christmas game with the ghost... :ponder:

It would be fun if there were also some "themes" per season. For instance, as we get into summer, we could celebrate the release of the new Independence Day movie with an "Alien Invasion" theme:

  • Atlantis
  • Demon Attack
  • Space Spartans
  • Centipede

Or games with monsters during a Halloween theme:

  • Dracula
  • Beauty & The Beast
  • Night Stalker

Just a few ideas on how to make it fun and exciting. I really think we need fresh blood in this forum and perhaps entice more people from the Intellivision community to participate and play the games we all enjoy. :)

My suggestions.

1) Change the point system.

I like the one point difference per place system: 10, 9, 8 ... .... 1. <-- this is my suggestion but these are also good:

I guess Ignorama wanted a 10, 8, 6, 5 .... .... 1 system.

In Nes HSC, it's used a Formula-1 point system.

In Colecovision, Ikrananka started to use a percentage system. The highest score beeing 100%.

2) Round time frame.

2 weeks* round: actually starting Saturday until third Sunday.

This way we'll have two games to play in the last weekend of each round.

3) Homebrews

I think we should only choose homebrews which were sold in cartridge and is freely available in rom.

If I'm not wrong, these are the requirements to choose homebrews for the Atari 2600 and 7800 HSC.

By the way, which homebrews are freely available for download and were sold in cartridges?

This is a good question for the Inty forum, we'll have the list and while announcing the new HSC season, if this rule is used.

I posted the thread asking for a list.

Don't forget Q*Bert, it's really fun to play for competition :)

I wouldn't really like the percentage scoring system. It tends to quickly narrow a competition to it's detriment imho. It can work in a 'deca' (decathlon) scenario like on twin galaxies mame contests in days of yore, but doing week to week I think it might discourage competition too early maybe.

I think two weeks is a good time frame as well.

Does percentage system mean the winner always gets 100% and the other players there score in percentages? So if I win the first two rounds my score would be 200%, while the player who had half my points in both round would get 50% for each round, so 100% overall?

If I get it right I would also refuse that system. It rewards specialists too much, while it punishes allrounder. With that system its in theory possible to loose the competition even if you won all but one single round. Sounds not very fair :D

And I am not a big fan of Carol

:_(

Its a separate contest every year, so it has its place.

Well, I thought a quick one- or two-week contest with no pressure for patches or other prizes would be nice so that everybody can participate, not just the high-scoring veterans. It is still a fun game with a nice scoring for advancement and no "cheats" or "camping zones," so it's suitable for HSC. ;)

We could even mix it with the CvW championship, like we did the first two years; so that the last HSC season overlaps with it.

It was just an idea, I don't mind either way. I am just happy that the HSC is starting again and I look forward to playing some games with everyone. :)

I swear my plan wasn't to pass everyone playing Carol. icon_lol.gif

I do not like the extra point system to be honest. When I am not wrong you gave me two and Oscar one extra point for new records, correct? If you give a extra point for every new record you enable weird and unfair situations. So if we play a game with a low Highscore, I could break that record, stop playing, make a new record, stop again and do this over and over. So I would get an extra point for every new record and even if someone beats my record at the end I probably have more points than him, because I got maybe 10 extra points for new records and he just one.

This system also motivates to play worse than you can, because you could leave some space to improve your score for more points.

Honestly I would completely cut all extra points for new records. This would "hurt" me most actually, since I got more extra points than Oscar did. But if you want to keep that, please change the system to ONE extra point for just ONE Player who broke the record in the final results. As I explained the actual system invites to abuse it.

All in all I am not really satisfied with that scoring system. The winning is not rewarded enough. Just imagine a player wins 5 rounds in a row the another player always ends in the 2nd place. The lead will only be 5 points, which means if the leading player sucks in one single game he could loose his lead, even if he smashed all the other rounds all other players. Even worse: If he not actually sucks in that game, but ends in 7th place with a very small deficit in the final score.
