Who is going to buy the Playstation VR this October?

The Ps VR will be released in October for $400, plus it requires the $45 PS camera and probably a $50 Move controller.

 

I am interested in this, but if I am going to drop $550 for the VR and game I definitely want to try it out first. I am a little worried that this will not get the support Sony boasts.

 

Anyone else interested in this?

Sony have a nasty habbit of releasing great tech, but failing to provide the essential software support for it, in too many cases for myself to jump in with the PS4 VR.

 

The PSP had lots of titles annouced, nothing came of it, Vita was pretty much abandoned to indie developers to support and i never saw a Killer-App for the Move on PS3, so i'm curious to see what resources Sony throw the VR's way.

But if VR support is little more than that Move had for certain games, it's not going to convince me to make that quite big investment, having taken a pay cut already this year/just bought a PS4 as is.

 

Rebellion's Battlezone is said to be impressive, but i await to see just how much depth over novelty the key games offer.

I'm most likely going to end up with a Rift though I do like the idea of the new StarVR, so I may ultimately end up going that route though I'm unsure. The PSVR would be good for the console side of things and there's no reason to doubt that Sony will do it right and at this price, it's more economically affordable. I don't even want to know what the StarVR will be priced at and even then, who knows when or if that thing will drop.

 

No idea what games will be coming to utilize the headset so that'll be key. Missile Command VR anyone? :D

A $400 peripheral for a $350 console that requires another $100 worth of peripherals for it to work? Count me in… NOT! ;)

 

 

...actually, if it turns out to be ultra cool and worth purchasing the system for, I'm the kind of schmuck that would foolishly waste money on something like this and hope to hell I could get most of money back if/when it turns out to be a dud! :lol:

The "sad" part is is it's the cheapest "real" VR you'll be able to buy, even if you're starting from scratch (meaning also buying the console, or in the case of the Oculus and Vive, buying the computer). With that said, this is early days for a technology movement that I firmly believe is finally here to stay (some of my thoughts here), so prices will inevitably drop and features will inevitably increase. It will indeed be exciting to see where we are with this stuff in five years, let alone 10.

Its too much money (for me) but its technically the cheapest as Bill mentioned.

 

I'm definitely interested but I can't justify the price until I experience it for myself, nausea and all.

 

Anyone actually try one of these things yet?

 

Kind of interested in Vive more than Sony's or Facebook's devices. Yes, yes because Valve is involved. :party:

Kind of crazy to think that Atari was actually touting prices of $299 for their VR headset back in 1995 but this kit is a whole different beast altogether. I'm glad the legalities of VR has been laid to rest though I'm sure some sort of waiver just by using the headset will be included. I still think the PSVR is the coolest looking for the current iteration of VR headsets, though the StarVR looks interesting as well. The Rift is just a high-quality headset. It's missing the lure, lust or soul in its design.

I like this little blurb, interest escalates when I read things like this:

I'll definitely be waiting a long time on this stuff. Even if it's totally mindblowing, I can't see myself strapping shit to my face and going at it for a long gaming session. If VR was as simple as some sort of glasses (likely it would be, some day), it'd make sense, but this giant thing on your melon is insanity. What if you need to go rock a piss? Take a swig of beer? Eat a snack? You gotta unstrap this behemoth off your head to go and do anything. It's a cool idea that finally, seemingly, can be done effectively, but it is still a giant inconvenience. Nerds whined about having to move their arms with the Wii a bit, let along move their entire bodies, including your head unless you play with a controller, which then kind of defeats the purpose of the technology a bit.

 

VR in its current state is gonna be good for porn and virtual tours. Gaming isn't gonna work nearly as well until the thing on your head is more akin to Sega 3D glasses. Without a doubt, it'll be mind blowing impressive, but how long can you really sit uninterrupted without using your eyes for anything else at all? Cell phone ringing, goddamn kids crying, people knocking on your door. I can't wait for videos of the asshole who trips over his dog with his ridiculous VR headset on, swinging his Move controller around like a jackass.

I'm definitely going to pass on this one. Since I don't own a PS4 it would be a minimum of a $650 investment for what will (in my ever so subjective opinion) amount to a nausea inducer. A nausea inducer with a small library of titles to choose what kind of subject matter you want to get nausea from no less.

I'm interested and fascinated by the tech and would love to try it but not at those price points. I would need everything as I don't own a PS4 and considering the state of the Canadian dollar, my actual cost will be significantly higher than the prices listed in US dollars. Like microwaves and cd players and every other tech before it, the prices will come down and the features and quality will go up. I see no reason to jump into this right away.

I'm interested in the whole VR tech and once I get to experience it, I will make a decision. As I have a PS4, this is easiest path to entry for me as I don't want a new pc just for VR. If I experience VR and enjoy it, I don't see any problem dropping $650 (Cabadian) for the VR and the additional doo-dads required.

 

It's always exciting at the dawn of a new era... the beginning of the Wii era was impressive but it didn't last long. The VR era may end up with a similar fate or it may become the way to experience games going forward. Time will tell.

Crude? It looks as polished as the more expensive options. Every VR option has multiple wires and accessories. There's no way around that as of yet. Maybe in five years or so we'll start to see practical solutions for around the same price points that are untethered.

If that is enough for you to enjoy thats fine. Myself, I can't commit $400 to something like that. The wires are fine by me (it would be cool to be wireless sure), it's the whole control scheme of bobing your head in and out,ect that just seems so crusty to me.

That's VR. You move your head like you're in the environment. That's the same whether it's Google Cardboard or something like this. That kind of defines what VR is.

Wonder if this will flop, and be worth double the price in a few years?

 

I doubt it will flop as it looks like it will easily sell out the first few million based on the pre-order buzz, but that's no guarantee it's going to be a lasting success, at least for this iteration of it. This is still early days for this technology. As for doubling in price, nothing in the console space hardware-wise really doubles in price (it usually drops), just a very select few games, and that's usually limited release ones. With the move to digital, it's unlikely we'll even see that on the software side, though, unless something were to become delisted for some reason.
