Anyone else collect Vic 20 carts?

Yes - but...

Got a system and 10-12 carts several years ago. Picked a few off E-Bay but then it seemed like everybody wanted $20 for commons.

Got a multi-cart (excellent buy) and pull the system out once or twice every other year to play (more of a C64 guy - although that has been in storage for 4-5 years...)

The Mega-Cart contains 180 cartridge images, of which a few are variations. The online rarity guide at Digital Press has 177 US and 19 non-US titles, of which some of the non-US are variations.

Then there are a few very rare, yet once commercial, titles that haven't been dumped/shared, so certainly 180 should be a good enough number, perhaps a few more. I'm not up to date with how many recent homebrews have been released on cartridge rather than another format, but Digital Press only mentions Mega-Cart and Behr Bonz in that category.

Undiscovered games still keep turning up and everyone's still hoping for that elusive Wizard of Wor prototype. The VIC still has a lot of uncharted territory because it's not as popular with the retro community as the C64/2600/ZX Spectrum yet was still semi-popular in its day.

Most of the undiscovered games turn up on tape because there were so many different software houses and it was so easy to learn how to code and find someone to publish your Pac-Man/Frogger clone. Sure, that leads to plenty of shovelware but there are a few diamonds in the rough.

The Vic 20 doesn't get as much love as it deserves. I had a Vic and an Atari 2600 growing up and love them both. Here's one of my rarer games...

I'm not sure I've seen what you own. A list would be great, especially if you have more games like that heh. Any chance of selling Bug Crusher, because I don't own it yet? ;)

And if not, I'd definitely appreciate a proper scan of the front artwork, because I don't have it in GameBase20 either.

I own over 160 Vic20 cartridges, most of the boxed, and that's not including variants and the European packaging versions of some titles (as Carlson alludes to). Most of what I still need I've barely ever seen in my travels, and we only know exists because Ward dumped it in the 90s. Finding a piece of hay in a stack of needles :P

Disk, I would guess less than 20 but I could be wrong. While the computer perfectly well handles floppy drives and the 1540 specifically was made for it, the media never took off. Perhaps because drives cost more than the computer, and you likely would spend that extra money on a memory expansion before getting a drive.

Mayhem will be able to give you a good number on the tapes, but the site vic20tapes.org has 889 entries, plus another dozen of loose tapes.

Then you have all the type-ins and public domain software.

I have about 120-130 carts, not counting my MegaCart, mostly loose.

Bug Crusher isn't for sale. Even though the cellophane is in bad shape, I don't want to remove it. What do you need in order for something to be a "proper" scan?

What other carts do you still need?

I got some Vic-20 carts, it is an oddball system like a bastard sibling between PET and C64. I had it for a couple years before my family got C64 and the Vic-20 were mostly sitting in boxes getting dust. The games I used to like were Radar Rat Race and Monster Maze.

I can't even remember what all I have but I never got any RAM expansion since all of the games I had on tape were from PET (2k mostly) and when I got C64 the 20 were just sort of pushed aside and forgotten for years. I am sort of glad it was overlooked the few times my family had yard sales.

I upgraded to a C64 at some point also. Shortly after getting my C64, I sold a bunch of my Atari 2600 games to buy a 1541 disk drive (at K-mart). Luckily, I kept my 2600 and a handful of games. It didn't get much use though because the race was on to acquire as many games as possible and copy them to disks.

I have 78 VIC-20 carts, 44 of them boxed. Five of those are some form of RAM expansion. I'd love a multi-cart, but don't feel like waiting years for the cart to be built.

You should take a look at the Behr-Bonz. Built and shipped in 3 weeks and you can get them from eslapion on the Denial forum:

Ideally the box itself flat down on the scanner, scanned at 300dpi. But if you don't want to remove the cellophane (which I completely understand) and it won't slide off easily, then that might be a little tricky to achieve :/

As for what I still need... hmmm... gonna have to consult The Book of Armaments... and the Holy Hand Grenade of Digital Pressioch... and I'm only listing US releases here, not any of the European repackagings or the Japanese "exclusives". And what cartridges I don't own in any capacity (for example I do own Bug Crusher, but just the cart, not the box).

Alien Sidestep (OEM), Arachnoid (UMI), Baldor's Castle (Daedalus), Black Jack (OEM), Block Buster (OEM), Bomber Word (Tymac), Cat Burglar (OEM), D*Fuse (Tymac), Droids (TG Software), Firefighter Mario (OEM), Mario's Brewery (OEM), Maze (HES), Mosquito Infestation (HES), Satellite Patrol (HES), Space Ric-o-shay (OEM), Sub Chase (UMI), Topper (Romox).

That might be about it from what I can ascertain...

Hmmm, I don't own a scanner although I'd be willing to take a high quality picture.

The only game I have that you still need is Black Jack.

Wow. Don't even have a dump of Black Jack, so never even played the game. If you can dump the cart too, that would be great :)

(Albert supposedly has a few OEM games from that list, but no one ever got around to dumping them for posterity sadly yet)

In the circumstances, if you can't scan the box fronts of both games, high quality photos would suffice instead. I can crop/resize as need be for the database.

I still wonder about VIC-7101 Turtle Bridge. Given how many price lists it was present in, it gotta exist. Yet the numbering doesn't match the Handic releases in the VIC-73xx series, and outside of Sweden it barely seems to have been mentioned. There is a B&W game on the infamous Cascade 50 tape collection called Turtle Bridge, but I strongly doubt it is the same. I have looked everywhere I could think of, but not seen anything in modern days.

Of course there are a lot of other vaporware titles, but usually those are only mentioned once and not given a price tag in a ready-to-buy mail order catalogue.

The good news and bad news is that Black Jack is still sealed. I haven't been able to play it.

Thank you for this link. I sent an e-mail about buying one of these.

The VIC-20 is what got me started in Software Development all those years ago.

I remember typing in programs that were printed in magazines. Seemed like it took forever but It was great to play the game and then go back and change the program and see what would happen.
