marlowe221 Posted April 7, 2016 Share Posted April 7, 2016 I recently got a 7800 and a handful of games. One of them is Robotron 2084 - cool game, but awkward to play with two joysticks! What's the best way to play this game from a controller perspective? I actually thought I might take a couple of Sega Genesis controllers and use them with a thumb on each d-pad but I am open to other suggestions. I own one. This controller feels like it was designed BITD alongside the cart. Its amazing how smooth the game play is with this controller. I'm very happy with this controller. The reason I haven't bought one of those is because the buttons are oriented north-south instead of the standard east-west. I have a north-south setup on my 60-in-1 cabinet and it works but it's awkward (the reason I did it is because it's a Congorilla with a painted control panel and I didn't want to booger it up). It's a moot point with Robot Ron but if I'm going to plop down $150 I want to use it for more than just Robot Ron. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It doesn't have to be fancy and with their relatively short throw they work very well this way. The Super Twin 78 looks pretty cool but... it also seems a little like swatting a fly with a cruise missile; I'm sure it's a nice control stick but that is a lot of money to me! I actually have two Slik Sticks I was planning to do something similar with (sometimes I like building stuff more than playing stuff). In the case of nice square controller like those or the original 2600 sticks, my idea was to just make a box with a partition in it. Each side would be JUST big enough to place the stick bases in (super tight tolerance), with a notch cut out at the top for the cord(s) to come out. Then I was going to use the SOFT side of stick on velcro to line the interiors of each side...tightening it up enough to hold the controller while leaving the controllers removable. Simpler, but more permanent...just put the disassembled 2600 stick bases (only) on a board, mark and drill out where the screw locations are on the board, hard mount the bases with some NEW holes and some screws, and then reassemble the sticks, from the bottom. You can't easily detach them that way, and you do have to put holes in them, but they'll be rock solid. Robotron is a GREAT 7800 game which really takes advantage of the 7800s ability to push a bunch of stuff around on the screen at once without flicker or slowdown. It is SUPER fun with a good twin stick set up, whether you buy an Edladdin stick or just slap two controllers on a board! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Have not tried Defender Arcade, but I have played Stargate with it before and it plays fine. All of the dual stick functionality works as described in the manual. I will say that for Stargate, I like a stick with a very short throw and the SuperTwins throw is not as short as say, that of a slick stick. There is also the pretty rare joystick coupler that came with Spy Hunter on the 2600.
