Opinions on upgrades and mods

If you're not afraid of a bit of soldering get a MegaSpeedy instead of a Happy.

It works just like a Happy and also like ALL other hardware upgrades there ever were for the 1050.

The biggest advantage is the Speedy mode which boasts track buffers large enough to make your 1050 fly.

Also has multiple "fake" drives that you can program with f.i, your favorite DOS and Sector copier programs. These are loaded from the internal memory of the MegaSpeedy so extremely fast.

Be sure to run a modded OS from your U1MB to get the best SIO performance.

On the other hand, a 1050 is not really needed these days.

Oh and get a The!cart.

Oh and stereo POKEY yes, do it.

It's cheap and indeed not too many programs use it, but the newer games that do, like Yoomp!!! alone is worth it,

Also plenty of stereo demo music. Pokey in stereo is simply awesome.

Hmmm,

Stereo Pokey... "not too many programs use it"... errrm, look here:

http://a8.fandal.cz/search.php?search=stereo&butt_details_x=x

It currently shows 435 records.

SHE's ALIVE!!

post-45982-0-03858000-1469079792_thumb.jpg

So I got it to boot, wiring is ok, HDD switch still working on "adjusting" it in the slot.. but all the wiring is there and seems to be fine.

Wires routed well, I have a little bit of excess wire, but nothing huge, and I have plenty of room :)

I think I have a bad battery, I am sure at this point its old, everytime I boot it resets everything.

But uflash did boot fine, and as soon as I compile all the latest versions of Flash's bios' I will be updating!

Is there a guide anywhere on how to use the CF card??

FJC has a good guide about FDISK/APT on his site.

Step 1: Read it

Step 2: Read it again.

Step 3: Partition your CF

Step 4: Curse

Step 5: Redo everything.

I'm speaking from experience. ;-)

Did you get your incognito Josch? everything go well in your install?

Did you change RD4 and RD5 for your Incognito installation?

Can someone tell me, what the purpose of the resistor change would be?

When I'm at it: What is the purpose of unused headers, especially the really big one?

The 50 way header is a PBI connector, pin compatible with that found on an XL. One may - for example - connect IDE Plus 2.0 or Turbo Freezer directly to it via a 50 way IDC cable (tried both and both work).

Ah, that's a nice feature. I wonder, why Candle doesn't mention this on the Incognito page.

The RD4 and RD5 resistors are replaced just for some Cart compatibility... you have XL/XE compatibility but if you want to run XL/XE carts some of them are built to a different level than the older 800/400 carts and you might find that you still cant boot them even if the OS is compatible now.. Super quick and easy exchange.. and since I had to solder two lines on to them anyway.. got er done!

I think the last header no one has mentioned is if you need to connect a direct flash updater rather than go through the system and Uflash.. a JTI flasher or something??

Ok, I installed the Incognito:

I updated to FJK's newest BIOS:

Now, I have two issues:
1.) When turning the computer on, it simply hangs until I press Reset.
Then everything works just fine.
What could be the reason for that?
2.) Running in XL mode, I often get the message "179 memory conflict" when running programs like FDISK, APTDEV and Last word.
What's wrong?

SpartaDOS X 4.47 User's Guide, Appendix B "Error messages", page 241:

179 $B3 'Memory conflict'
An attempt to load a program, which overlaps the DOS kernel or the I/O library area. It
often indicates, that the program has to be executed using X.COM.

You may want to consider adding COMEXE.SYS to your CONFIG.SYS.

I should have stated that X didn't help. These are all programs I never have problems with on an Ultimate.

Could the cause of the issue be that the SDX on the Incognito uses OSRAM?

Mem /X says:

Main: $2C6B, $2C6B, $0000
Ext: $7F38, $7F38, $0000
Use: Banked, PORTB $0D
Top: $9C1F ($BC1F),$7FFF
Free: 28596 (36788),199

64 Banks total (1024 KB)
4 banks free (64KB)

The config.sys is:

DEVICE SPARTA OSRAM
DEVICE SIO
DEVICE ATARIDOS
DEVICE ULTIME
DEVICE JIFFY
DEVICE PCLINK
DEVICE RAMDISK

Here on identical configuration (and on SDX 4.47 - the only difference being that it is U1MB and not Incognito) MEM /X displays this:

Main: $11A2,$11A2,$0000
Ext: $74C7,$74C7,$0000
Use: BANKED, PORTB $0D
Top: $9C1F ($BC1F),$7FFF
Free: 35453 (43645),2872

64 banks total (1024 KB)
4 banks free (64 KB)

Note how high is the MEMLO value on your side, both in the main RAM and the Ext RAM: $2C6B and $7F38, when it should be $11A2 and $74C7, respectively.

I guess that for a reason one of the components - SPARTA.SYS maybe - is loaded twice.

Now I'm at a CATCH-22: I can't run UFLASH to flash a new SDX image.

You're correct, there was a double "device sparta". I got the config.sys from the backup rom, I confused with the correct one.

One other problem now surfacing is, that a soon as I try to boot without SDX in XL mode, I got "NO DOS" and no normal boot. It doesn't matter whether I disable SDX in BIOS nor via COLD /N.

In Colleen mode the computer does an normal boot to MyDOS, but UF128.XEX (was in the Incognito BIOS package) crashes after selecting the hardware.
