mame versions, roms and CHDs?

I know that Mame and the roms have to be "matched" to be working, same version (whatever that internally means)

How about the CHDs?

Is any new version of mame required to have matching CHDs or the CHD versioning story is different?

Pretty sure it is the same deal ROMS / CHD / MAME all matching version. CHD's are revised, updated, added and removed just the same as roms. I have only ever obtained ROM sets with the CHD's and since they are offered together it only seemed logical that they must also be matched.

I get them separated (and only got the CHD very recently to try them out), and from a few searches it seems the CHDs rarely change at all and have their own version format (now at V5).

I trust that from time to time new CHDs get added and maybe few get fixed (if anything wrong is found) but I am not sure they have been touched much at all recently.

Well usually people scoff when I say because you get the old "WHY PAY FOR IT??? ARE YOU NUTS???" Well, no actually but with my ISP I AM bandwidth restricted as well I just like receiving full ready to go sets on media (or sometimes even on HDD) because this way it is ready to go just drag n drop and if they come on DVD then I guess I already have it archived so it is well worth in my opinion to pay for the media and someone else's time just for the convenience. Anyway, I have gotten from various MAME DISTRIBUTORS in past but last time I got MAME (all roms and CHD's on external HDD) plus several other rom collections from HERE :

Yes the MAME .173 COMPLETE HARD DRIVE - Set means it comes on a Hard drive. The other sets come on DVD and smaller non mame rom sets have download options (though those I would simply download elsewhere)

 

And yes OF COURSE technically it is all illegal so it is your call, use such services or download yourself. In the end you get the ROMS you want so you are your own moral guide. You will get what you paid for and imho in the end as long as you are not personally selling or distributing nobody is going to "bust you" or really give a crap but whatever. You asked and I answered.

Correction ! Sorry my mistake, I considered and bought other items from Romcollector site (DVD'S compilations) but the most recent MAME set I got with some other ROM sets on a HDD was THIS ONE from Lazarus, I just check the external HDD and wondered why a folder on it was called Lazarus, my memory is just not what it was lately but for clarity and accuracy it was "The Complete Hard Drive Set 2" -- $140.00 from Lazarus site here:

I usually "gather' a full Mame set once a year, but they will come in handy one way or another.

I stopped DLing sets directly by myself when thy started to cross a few GBs, I have limited bandwidth and I am not keen in DLing for days on end (torrent or otherwise)
