1050 dreamin' - and a surprise!

I don't sleep all that well if I don't take ambien (or go to bed shitfaced, but I'm not drinking for 3 weeks now so thats not an option) but ambien gives me weird dreams.. A fair tradeoff I guess..

Anyways.. so I have this dream that I'm in my garage and I've got 1050 drive after 1050 drive in a cabinet.. I just keep pulling them out like they are neverending. Cartoonish almost in the dream.

So yesterday I'm pulling out all my 8bit stuff to clean up since I'm getting back into the scene again and I find a box.. Yep.. there its - a 1050 that I didn't even know I had. And another below it, and yet another below it....

I've got 3 1050's I had no freaking clue I had for who knows how long.

Not counting on all of them working but I'm going to clean them up and check them out... I have 2 xf551's now so I probably won't keep a 1050 - or maybe just one... So if you are looking for a 1050 or two let me know and maybe we an work out some kind of deal.

I'm in Dallas.

sorry to hear that FJC..

NDary.. Not sure.. I'm kind of an odd 8bit enthusiast as I am more into apps and utils than I am games..

I could possibly just give it to you I guess, but feel free to share some things you might feel like would be a worthy trade.. :)

Nice! Hopefully one or more work. Coincidentally I pulled all four of my 1050s out of the cupboard today and not one of them works. :(

nothing at all? no power?

or do they spin up and then not work?

One has no belt but if I swap the belts it's still dead. Have swapped all mechs with all boards and the best I get is a hum or tiny travel on the head. A total mess. I have no idea what mech and what board works (if any) and thus little idea how to proceed. The only 1050 I knew worked spontaneously died after I fitted a US Doubler. Undid the mod and it's still dead. It's a 1050 Bermuda Triangle.

are any of the large caps bulging? or getting hot?

if you had one drive that you know worked (before the USD mod) - i'd use that as your starting point

if it's got no power, i'd use the mech from that one in the unit/board that "gives some tiny travel"

you may have one good working drive there

No obviously bulging caps but I understand 12v is the issue in 75 per cent of cases. Head travel is intermittent and the same drive even a spun up at one point then died again. I guess there could be poor connectivity on either motor's wiring.

My xf551didnt read a disk the other day so I turned it off and have not tried again.

It could still be working.... If I don't try it again for another year then it lasted another year. Denial can be useful to save money :-)

That worked for me with the 1050s: they were fine until I looked at them. :) My XF551 encountered some disk errors in c. 1995 and I applied sewing machine oil to the spindle and ran the drive on its side for a while and it worked perfectly ever since. :) I have a second one too which is still going strong... I guess I have the opposite experience to most (i.e. it's traditional that XFs fail on the SIO connector while 1050s keep going).

Ack... one of the test boards appears to be putting out 12v on all pins of J15. I'm imagining anything which got hooked up to that during testing is fried now... all the ICs on the board are burning hot, of course.
