Nintendo, What Went Wrong

Recommended Posts

I love Nintendo

I think the downfall started with the GameCube, In Mags at the time, I only see AAA Titles for the PS2/Xbox..I was thinking I wonder why is that, Does Nintendo don't like Big Games on there System

Same on the Wii/Wii U

No AAA Titles on it, Well some, But not like the PS3/Ps4/360/One

No titles like CoD, Battlefield, Battlefront, Street Fighter IV and so on..Why

I heard the Wii wasn't Powerful enough or Nintendo force devs to use the GamePad on the Wii U

Discuss, I want to know the truth why devs got scared away from Nintendo

1. Dumping Sony for Phillips for the Nintendo Playstation that never was.

2. Cartridges for N64 instead of CDs.

3. Waiting too long to release the Super Famicom/SNES.

4. SNES CPU too slow.

5. SNES not backward compatible with NES.

6. Wii underpowered.

7. GameCube looking too kiddy.

I speak truth.

Game Cube mini discs barely held data for more than two CDs. Some PS1 games in multi disc comps used more than that. Of course the disparity was nothing quite as bad as N64's 64Mbytes compared to PS1's 650Mbytes. PS2 and Xbox had 8.7 Gigs to play with whereas GC only had 1.4. Cartoony games like Mario Kart or Sunshine which recycled textures and objects rarely filled the whole disc. If a AAA developer put out a game on a dual layer disc for PS2 / Xbox, how were they supposed to shrink said game to port to Game Cube, even if the hardware was technically capable? Honestly Game Cube graphics had better antialiasing compared to PS2 and never suffered from jaggies much, but wasn't blurry like N64 either.

Wii was an "overclocked" Game Cube with waggle controls, and Wii-U had misunderstood (but still awesome) tablet controller, and was on par performance wise with the 360. Slightly better graphics but slightly slower CPU. It also didn't help Nintendo got a year's head start with Wii-U but completely failed to take advantage ofit by not advertising the system. A simple marketing campaign on mainstream media could have eliminated consumer confusion over the tablet controller but they rather preach to the chior with live Direct and Treehouse videos, as well as a few failed viral marketing attempts.

I sometimes worry about Big N's future as it seems the NX may turn out like Sega's Dreamcast, and that would make me a sad panda...

I thought Nintendo could do no wrong!

They can't do wrong. Mario and Zelda represent everything good in gaming. Anything First person shooter, and MS/Sony, but mainly MS, represent pure evil and must be banished into the netherworld... :ponder:

end rabid fanboyism

Just realistically, watching everything that's gone down, I just have a sinking feeling, that the NX may be their last console, but I'll support them to the bitter end regardless. Nintendo is out of touch with modern gamers, but then again so am I. I don't follow trends or participate in the specs race or epeen wagging contests. I just love fun games, and on that front, Nintendo delivers... :P

The Wii is the 3rd best seller home console in history (after PS2 and PS1 [actually almost matching the PS1 at 1% difference]) .

So what happened after that is anyone's guess. I believe they mishandled their one trick pony and went too much for the gimmicky factor.

An HD Wii was long overdue and the Wii U with the very expensive tablet controller just doesn't do it .... but if a Wii U kind of machine without the tablet but with a solid pad (like the pro pad) in addition to the wii-mote was out a few years earlier it would have been different .... imho.

The 1Y advantage on the PS4/XB-one with only the tablet to go on its "merits" did Nintendo not enough good.

Actually capability-wide the Wii U is what the Wii should have been from the beginning. Again imho.

Don't believe the GameCube was problematic from it hardware or software side it was a nice system

Nintendo problems are mainly centered around marketing 3rd party games, and not having good marketing for their system as a whole in the western world.

Believe they went super cheap once Microsoft jumped into the ring

Nintendo need to shake those old dinosaurs running things in Japan.

They don't adapt. And they need to stop being so conservative.

Build a controller that makes common sense and hire someone to build them an online network please.

I would not release the NX at all either.

The Neo and Scorpio will have developers turning their nose at Nintendo with their hardware,Nintendo cannot continue to do things their own way. Its killing them and the more they keep doing it the worse things are going to get.

But like I said - they need a shake up with those old guys in japan that refuse to adapt.

I hope they can do it. I like Nintendo but they are like that addict that won't change unless they really want to for themselves.

I think Nintendo needs to bring back the NES. Not the original but a new one. Kind of like how they have New Super Mario Bros., New 3DS, and whatever else they are calling New now. Instead of calling it the NES they can call it the Nintendo NES(Nintendo New Entertainment System). The console could have the style of the NES but mixed with the more rounded glossy look of the Wii U and maybe a bigger size closer to the XBOX ONE. The cartridge flap would open up to expose the disc drive and maybe other things like SD card slots. The game cases for the discs would look like NES carts with even the front and end labels showing the same when closed. The controller would be the Classic Controller Pro with an NES controller paint job and they bring back the Zapper but it houses a Wii controller to play New Duck Hunt on modern screens that would be one of the pack in games with the other being New Super Mario All-Stars that would include a compilation of remakes of many Mario games. Its disc drive would be able to play anything all the way back to the Game Cube. For the cartridge based systems they would still use the Virtual Console for backwards compatibility but if you have a subscription to Nintendo Power sometimes you will get codes for getting free Virtual Console games and it would have offers for buying Virtual Console games in disc form. For an example, you could buy the original Super Mario Bros. and get it on disc within the NES cart like cases I already described. For its new games it would have power like that of Sony and Microsoft's consoles and market that power by bringing back Nintendo's old hard core identity with new "Now you are playing with power!" commercials. Bringing back that Nintendo may get the AAA titles.

A shame that the high sales didn't actually mean much to actual gamers, or devs, since most Wiis sold rarely sold any other games after the hardware - the casual crowd were getting it as a party game and that was about it.

What happened after that was they didn't learn that these casual gamers don't buy sequels.

I actually disagree on the tablet thingy. It's awesome as I do 90% of my gaming on it and rarely use the TV anymore.

We used our Wii mainly to watch Netflix. For the longest time I didn't even know what Wii U was. The ads didn't help me understand what it was or why I should want one.

This all goes back to advertising. Nintendo had a year long headstart and basically shot themelved in the foot by not agressively marketing the thing. Nintendo had better not make the same mistake with NX.

Nintendo need to shake those old dinosaurs running things in Japan.

They don't adapt. And they need to stop being so conservative.

With Iwata gone now (may he rest in peace) perhaps change can take place. They run Nintendo as if it's still the 1950s. Where's all the forward thinking brass they had in the 1980s? NX has potential sure, but is it too little, too late? I also don't put total faith that the Xbone / PS4 reboots will be runaway success either. MS/Sony, who traditionally rely on releasing overpowered hardware as loss leaders, are fracturing their own market. People don't realise how razor-thin the margins are as hardware or software devs. If the two leg race were runaway success, they would not be trying to bolster sales mid-gen with new hardware.

8th generation gaming has overall been a letdown on all three fronts. The mobile revolution has prooven to be toxic to the traditional market and has all but destroyed handheld gaming. I'm begining to think Steam has the most potential, if only more devs would embrace SteamOS, and they could somehow lose the "always online" DRM.

I think more on anything now a days its the next generation of young gamers that will make the big difference. Even toys are evolving but not all.

Take Lego's and Hot Wheels Cars pretty much they are the same things we all had when we were that age. Their lack of change has not hurt business for either. They have commercialized more though creating movies series and shows to push product.

Yet there are new toys and weird crap like Shopkins and new revisions on Nerf guns for girls and boys ( also catering to movies if applicable). They reinvent every few months to keep it going.

So young gamer's love their little tablets or IOS devices because the billions of apps for games out there pretty much satisfies the needs of the new generation. So where does that leave consoles. Keep the in depth games with FPS and adventures but that's not for the young crowd and can be had on PC as well, or will Nintendo take a leap of faith pushing a device which might cater more to the kid generation that will be to tap a market saturated with crappy tower defense, running, angry bird close games?

I think its a gamble either way but those are just my thoughts as even my daughter has shunned her tablet at times just to go and play some good old NES.

3. The SNES won it's generation so what does that matter?

4. Aside from the Neo Geo it's the most powerful system of its generation so what does that matter?

5. I suppose

6. Still won it's generation

7. It definitely is

I'm old and irrelevant to "what is cool in gaming," but Nintendo nonetheless takes a lot of my money, if not my time.

I don't really care if they're the biggest gorilla in the world anymore, so long as they're profitable and relatively innovative with lots of polish in their games. They could be a neat little niche for kids and geezers while everyone else is playing Grand Theft Battlefield of Duty, that's fine with me. I personally believe that gaming has gotten bigger around them, but they're happy with the market they serve. Growth isn't everything.

I certainly don't pretend to know what is best for them. Everyone has their own ideas, some of which would be nice, like

  • put nintendo games on mobile
  • make an account system so we can share games in the family
  • make cheaper games
  • bring back the NES/gameboy/retro retread of your choosing
  • make games for playstation
  • sell out to sony, apple, whomever
  • fire the old japanese executives, they're so out of touch with today's market

...it's their company, they'll do what they will to it. I choose to take the optimistic (?) view that it's amazing that they've had as much success as they've already enjoyed!

Some residences in our town have spent upwards of $15,000 on Shopkins.

Social media on phones and tablets trumps ALL videogame consoles. Especially among teen girl gangs. Apps like Musical.ly are the center of attention. And not necessarily to their benefit.

If only something like THIS had existed, someones concept for a machine that existed before the original NES and SuperNES, hell I would STILL love to have this. Funny thing is these types of games could actually be delivered as a supplemental library on Nintnedo's next system which would certainly satisfy the die hard Nintendo fans. I suspect though if what you see in the article were dropped in today's market I would still be nore excited for it than whatever Nintendo is actually planning with NX etc.

Even TODAY it would rock and could be done cheaply and easily with today's low end hardware boards. Hey Nintendo keeps proving they are not into competing powerful hardware so why not embrace that stance fully?

I think you need to actually play the Wii and you'll discover like I did that there are some great & unique titles for it!

True, But I hate Motion Control Games, If the Game has Option for using the GC Controller or the Wii Pro Controller, I'm down with it, I have like 3 Games on it

Kirby's Dream Collection

Super Mario All-Stars Wii

Mario Kart Wii

I agree with everything above except selling out to Sony, et al. The day Nintendo sells out is the day they pull a "Sega". Releasing games on Sony or other platform is admitting defeat. Mobile is a different horse however, but Nintendo will not release games on mobile because mobile devices cannot provide the kind of game experience Nintendo is accustomed to providing because no buttons... :ponder:
