FlashROM99 - What kind of compilation(s) do you plan to make?

We all know there are a multitudes of possible configurations when expanding the hardware on our TI's, and we've seen a lot of those variations in the TI-99 Photos Thread. But now we have this incredible new "FlashROM 99" that will let us store massive amounts of stuff (up to 171 items) on a single cartridge. So this begs the question... WHAT DO YOU GUYS PLAN TO DO WITH THIS WONDER CART?

 

What kind of programs have you put on it already? Are you converting new goodies to put on yours? Are you writing any software for it that will exploit it's capabilities further?

Considering the average size of a cart image and the size range of sd cards, why plan anything?

 

I copied 5 "pages" worth of bin's onto a 1 GB card (so about 95 cartridges), and still had 998+ MB free! A single card will hold nearly every non-grom, non-CRU-bank-switched cartridge ever released, so my first compilation is going to be ...

 

...ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!!!!

 

And I gotta say with the FlashROM 99 in the cartridge port and the nanoPEB in the expansion port, My TI is looking mighty Geek-Chic these days. There's just something sexy about exposed 21st century circuit boards sticking out of a 80's console computer.

The very nature of this flashcart makes it easy to just willy nilly make any compilation (or single cart) you want, when you want. So if anything, having this cart has motivated me to make a few eprom multi carts. Those I can take the time to make masterpieces. The rest, I can put on the flashcart whenever I want with ease.

 

So the first one I will make is the Atarisoft cart.

You can only utilize a max of about 6 megabytes of the flash storage, as there is a file limit in the menu system. So don't get mislead looking at how much free space you have.

True dat. Ω mentioned it in his topic opener. I currently only have about 130 images (or whatever is in Classic_Carts and Homebrew_Carts archives) , so that's still ample space for everything I've got.

 

And years of digital cameras have ensured that as that collection grows, I have a closet filled with SD cards! (As was the case with Compact Flash cards for the nanoPEB). That's the REAL beauty, these newfangled gadgets! They allow the re-use of smaller capacity cards that would have otherwise been buried in the back of a closet (if not a landfill).

What other tools go with telecommunications and the browser? I've never used 4a archiving software, but I imagine I should find and prep that to reside near TIMXT for those BBS downloads.

 

A collection of programming tools will be nice. I like using the legacy tools while learning the base level skills.

 

I would like an 80 column editor next to EA, or just about any compilation of utils. Comes in handy next to the browser for managing favorites too.

Hi,

 

I am maintaining my CF and SD/HFE-repositories for 1+ years now, on my PC/Server.

So I have them on one point only, and automatically backups (as my Server is backed up),

and I have the "origin" repositories not on some memory cards flying around,

but well organized, ready to copy, on my PC.

I think all other people do this in a similar way.

 

But the contents are not sooo good as I am still working on this, and randomly adding interestant things

- that I see

- that are new

- that I like

- that other people refer

- that I have (!)

step-by-step

 

And I convert and store ALL DSKs as V9T9 in this repositories, only the HxC-filess are ready in HFE

(because ALL fiiles in my repositoies are just copies, inside this repository-structures,

and all the originals are well organized and stored in another folder-structure, by categories)

So my files for the different cards are always ready to copy & run to a card or ZIP, 100%

 

As expample, my HFE-Repository is the biggest now, as I use it very often on my Lotharek-drives,

and this SD-Card/HxC-drive has the most space / possibility for files.

 

Some days ago - many thanks to Omega for the repository-thread ) I started a new local repository for the FR99

But, as a matter of fact, as I am not able to convert/invert/bla files for that, because I am obliveous to that at the moment.

I am just lurking around for ready-4-A-FR99-card-files....

(thanks to all buddies here converting and providing these files here, you are my saviors, also WHTech/Greg)

 

I would be interested in doing some "global" repositories, if you just fully share yours, maybe in a ZIP.

Payback is guarantied, of course, with re-sharing that later.

But I would need all files that are "important", to have a sharable

repository that everybody can and will and would use, or take disks from.

Yeah, that's about 60 original 90K TI disks if I'm not mistaken, all on something about the size of a postage stamp. Gotta love it!

Writing style got away from me this time though...as my excitement about inserting 95 cartridges into the cartridge port all-at-once resulted in unintended capacity exaggeration.

 

The last time I was this impressed with modern/classic hybrid tech though, was when I stored all 487 (I think it was 487) Plato Courseware disks on a single CF (even though I wasted 310k for each disk because of the nanoPEB's inability to format a 90k disk)

 

I think the idea of putting 177 cartridges in the cartridge port at the same time has that experience beat though. (and being able to leave the files as bin's and the SD as FAT32 means it takes about 10 seconds to copy those 177 carts over!! In fact all I did to prep the SD was delete the DCIM folder I had on there from previous use.

 

Don't think I've been this blown away since the first time I heard the Parsec babe say "Press Fire to Begin" some 35 years ago.

Turbo Forth!

 

No longer have to get a new eprom burned with every revision. Just concatenate the c and d bins, and save em to an SD...Et voilá - a shiny new updated Turbo Forth Cartridge. No fuss, no muss.

 

Now how frackin' cool is that!?!?!

I'll post it in the other thread. I'll add, it is really cool too have both fbForth and TurboForth on the same cartridge Along with a gazilion other tools... And if anyone has some XB program they love, they should compile it, then those can run off this wonder cart as well provided you have a memory expansion.

Who wudda thunk it? More and more my diskettes are just going to be for program related data.
