How do I identify a "good" or "bad" DMA chip?

Just as the post asks. How do I identify the two? And what's the deal between the two? Will one die before the other? A little help for someone who knows nothing about it. Thanks in advance, later.

I've seen conflicting information about whether this DMA debacle is or isn't really a thing that can be fixed with a few well placed capacitors. I too would like to see a "modern" definitive answer on this topic.

 

I do seem to have an affected unit, though. My 520 STE won't interface with either a Satandisk or Supra 20gb. I can see at boot it does attempt to read them, but no dice. An older STM doesn't have these issues.

The known "bad" DMA chip serial numbers are: C025913-38 and PH23-001A. Take a look here: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=16745

I opened up my machine and checked under the floppy. Found that I had the C025913-38 labeled chip. Hooray... Thanks for the link above, I'll investigate if it becomes a problem.
