Elite: Dangerous...NOW what do you think?

Recommended Posts

Okay, folks. ED has been out for awhile now, and the expansions are there, so what do you think since you've played it awhile (any platform)? Does it still hold up to you, suck time away, or have you moved on? This game is absorbing, no doubt for me, anyway, and since it seems more stable than a few weeks ago, it's getting more attention again.

I'm sure more will be done with this title in the future (more expansions, tweaked game play, etc.), but are you or will you continue to play it?

I also have the Thrustmaster HOTAS system, and am just putting the finishing touches on my DIY VR headset so I probably should try it out sometime. I bought the basic package, spent a couple hours poking around in the game but it didn't do much to capture my attention off the hop.

Some random thoughts. Definitely a time sink, still has a learning curve like a cliff, more content options now, definitely more Dangerous with the new AI, can be a huge grind (if your play style is to grind), there's 'stuff' going on in the in game universe/sandbox but you still likely need to bring a large chunk of imagination with you for the best experience.

I play on PC and use an XB1 Elite controller, though I actually moved over from starting on the XB1 and no doubt have a frightful amount of total hours in. I have a dusty X52 HOTAS but really no desire to use it, the game pad is so much more handy.

On VR (Rift/Vive type) - if you're into this game VR is (as in most cases I suppose) a nearly indescribable experience. The difference between watching yourself fly your ship on a monitor and being in your ship can take your breath away. Literally the difference between a game you play and a place you go to.

Elite Dangerous is alright, I either play it occasionally with a wing of three other people or just by myself, but for the most part I've got a bit burned out on the game. I bought it and Horizons for $60 on Steam a while back, and after waiting a week for it to download I was constantly playing it for a week and a half, then I just quit playing. I get on maybe a few hours every week now, but apart from just making a bit of money to eventually upgrade ships I don't do much.

For stuff to do - Combat I've found to be a pain as I don't like keyboard controls too much but I can't get a gamepad to work at all and I don't want to spend $50 or so for a stick just to play the game. Trading is a bit boring but I've found it to do me the best for money. (got a 71-stop route... takes just a little bit) Exploration is a good bit of fun to me but I don't have a good ship for it yet, and stuff like mining I haven't exactly tried yet.

So yeah, the game is fun to play but I just can't stick to it for a while before I get bored of it after a bit. I figure like all the other games I have that're fairly big, I got burned out on playing it so much, so I just need a month or so of break time and then I'll find it fun again. Was it worth the $60? Yeah, I've got a good bit of time out of it already and I know I can get more out of it, I just need to find something be excited for something in it again.

Before I moved and had home internet, I sunk hours into it. I also bought the HOTAS Thrustmaster joystick to use for it and other space games I used to play like Freespace. It was 50 bucks well spent and I couldn't imagine using a controller or keyboard and mouse. Some people prefer it though, more power to them.

When I played I use to have to force myself to stop playing and to get some sleep even though I wasn't tired. And when I wasn't playing it I was thinking about maneuvers to practice and what ship to get. Yeah, it can consume you.

I eventually settled on an Eagle since I prefer handling over armor, but I might try a different ship whenever I jump back on. Or even go back to the Sidewinder since it's a decent ship even though you start with it. I haven't bought the expansion so I can't comment on it. If I had the money though I would get a VR setup for this game.

From my last play, I've been doing "data runs" and earning if not a load of money, enough to keep ahead and actually make a profit. Made a BIG newbie mistake and bought an Eagle but didn't check if the power plant could manage the loadout without tweaking the systems. Ended up interdicted, then had NO power to do anything except watch the NPC bad guy blow me to the farthest reaches of space as interstellar dust. :(

Now I'm back in the beginning ship, have over 100,000 credits, and am thinking of possibly starting up a mining operation with the most basic of haulers. But, that being said, it's been a few days since I've logged in and played. No VR set up for this title, and I'm not certain I could invest that cash for it, anyway. I would imagine (as was said) that the VR gives it a whole new level of immersion that would make the game even better.

I have the VR headset and I even purchased a Thrustmaster setup, but I haven't tried playing it yet. So, I'm interested in what others have to say about the game..

..Al

I'd like to know how this setup works too.

I've got the Rift and of course Eve, since it was free. I get dizzy if I play it too long.

Although I think Eve is rated 'intense' for comfort, I can say you need some decent VR legs for ED in comparison. ED isn't one of those titles that you should introduce someone to VR with, that's for sure :)

I don't have any issues with it though even in intense combat.

My sig says it all - but TBH I've hardly played it over the past few months. I'm nowhere near Elite status despite playing it on and off since launch. I did buy Horizons when they dropped the price to £20 and there is now a lot more to do than when the game first came out. I had a go a couple of weeks ago and ended up getting blasted by a station for defending myself against an NPC that was opening fire on me in the no-fire zone. CALL THAT JUSTICE? I DON'T!

Before, combat could be a bit (ahaha) hit'n'miss. I like the increased variety of missions and the fact that you now know what you're probably getting yourself into when you drop in to investigate an Unknown Signal Source.

Even now, I've hardly touched trading. I seem to have hit a major bug as well. I had an ASP Explorer and was ... well .. exploring. Then I logged off for a week or two. Then a few days ago I logged back in briefly while trying to get streaming to work with my Gear VR (couldn't get it to work properly) and found that I was docked in a station with my previous ship. WTF? Haven't reported it as I was just trying to get the VR set up.

BTW: I still use the keyboard/mouse.

If the enemy ship was scanned by you and shown as wanted, you would be free to retaliate. Open fire before the scan and it's illegal aggression which the station will kill you for.

Otherwise opening fire in a no fire zone will get you fined, but not killed.

I downloaded the free Elite Dangerous Arena from Steam last night. After seemingly infinite keys and captcha and passwords, it's installed.

Now I'm not sure it's a VR game... Are all version VR, and you go into the menu to set it up? It does not appear in the list with my other Steam VR games.

I really enjoyed the game initially, when an old friend of mine was playing with me. We did our thing for dozens of hours, and finally met up, which was fun. By this point, I had earned several ships, and found that I had more money that I knew what to do with.

But you hit this wall, I can't explain it. When you realize what the game has to offer without even having to see even a fraction of the universe and what it has to offer.

You take on a task, do said task, get paid. Sometimes you get in a fight, sometimes not. Sometimes you cash in big, sometimes you get caught, sometimes you have to bail your cargo and jet.

I used a high end HOTAS, and I couldn't go back to a XB1 controller. One thing I loved about it was the immersion factor. You really did feel like you were out there, space trucking, and doing freight runs. The occasional fight (or flee fest....) made it feel real. As in reality you're not always going to get caught by the police, or taken out by a hit man. I never felt completely "safe" in the game. There's that slight nagging feeling of fear creeping up behind you at all times. It's not a scary game by any means, just that you know that there's that 1% chance that you'll get in a fight. I sucked at dogfighting in this game, and just liked the "space trucking" aspect, so this gave it a cool sort of immersion factor which made the world feel real.

Other than that, like I said, as immersive and fun as it was, by the time I reached my friend....I had seen all I had needed to see. I never went back to it in the same way (diving in for hours) ever again.

Sometimes I get a slight itch to play. It was never enough to actually re-setup the HOTAS, though, except for one time. I convinced myself I was missing out, and I came back. But it was a few months down the road, and I had completely forgotten the controls for things like the scanners and cargo hook. By the time I limped along enough to figure out what to do again, I realized why I was bored with the game previously, and never returned. This took me about an hour to re-realize.

If I had to compare this feeling to any game, it would be Destiny. While two completely different games, both offer a very addicting experience you'll likely spend dozens if not several hundred hours into. But one day you'll question why you keep doing repetitive things over and over, when the experience really never changes, and the awe factor has been long gone. And you'll leave and never come back...

If this sounds worth it to you, good. You'll get your money's worth. If not, good. You're not missing game of the year. It's just kinda... what it is. If that makes any sense. It does what it does well, it just doesn't do much. For me, the cost of the HOTAS, the space the HOTAS took up, and the lack of really any driving purpose in the game (much like Destiny) certainly helped for me to call it quits.

I'll take breaks from F-Zero X... but I'll come back. I'll take breaks from Mario Kart.. but I'll come back. I'll take breaks from LoZ ALTTP.... but I'll come back. This is because, even if I get tired of them, they're such good games they're worth retreading.

This game does not have that same trait. Take that for what you will.

It could be said (as MotoRacer stated) that this game probably won't be re-played as many other titles over the years have been. However, to keep it fresh, I'm not going in every night to play, either. I have a LONG way to go in the game, and my other Xbone games need some attention, so Elite is shelved for now.

It has lore and community/faction goals. Check out Galnet News since something is usually always happening. I didn't join a faction, but thought about the Empire before since they're honest about slavery unlike the Federation. I really wish there was an offline mode which kind of seems silly, but when I played I rarely ran into live people.

I recently started to get into Elite Dangerous on the Xbox One and I'm really enjoying myself. The learning curve is steep, but once mastered, the gameplay and experience is rewarding. I've mainly been focusing on trading missions and stacking and cheesing the Skimmer and Generator combat missions using dumbfire missiles, to generate fast cash and get into the larger ships. I've recently allied with the Federation and I'm participating in my second community goal. After I finish up my current community goal, I want to work on my Faction rank and ranking up some Engineers for better gear. I also want to get into CQC and start working on some of the achievements for that. With the addition of CQC and Horizons, there is tons of variety in this game now. The future also looks great, as Frontier seems to have a solid road map for future expansions.

If anyone is playing on the Xbox, add me as a friend: MajorHavoc 2049.

A problem with the community goals is that if you're playing 'open' you're a target for griefers in the game, who sit around the community goal area looking for easy targets. There's been a lot of heated argument about these people. They are playing in the spirit of the game but people, such as myself, don't like them. It's easy to ignore these morons when it's happening to someone else. But when you're jumped by a fully armed 'Conda, without so much as a "hello, little prey," with nowhere to run then it turns you off playing in 'open'.

Mobius / Mobius PVE

That is all.. :)

Not when the group's infiltrated by scum like CMDR Harry Potter.

ED should be used in University psychology courses. Some people need psychological evaluation when they go into a private group to disrupt it, go into a live streaming charity gaming event to disrupt it and then post Islamic State-style Youtube videos of their kills.

Frontier are in a difficult position. What these idiots do is harassment. However, for one person to be harassed on a criminal level then there has to be a course of conduct against that person. So whether it's actually against their EULA is doubtful. It is also within the spirit of the game. In real life you have serial killers. That's what this lot are ... serial killers. They kill players for the fun of it.

What royally pisses people off even more, though, is that they are typically cowards. When they are hunted down they usually combat log when they realise they're not goint to win a fight. So, again, the aim is to irritate others. It's not done for self preservation.

I can't think of another game that has such a big problem with griefers. There was that famous incident in WoW a few years back which mirrored the sneak attack in ED when someone infiltrated a returning explorer's honour guard (3 months - or was it 6? - of exploration data wiped out in an instant) but nothing on the kind of scale you get in ED.

Yes, but they really wind up doing very little damage though it sucks for the CMDRs who did incur losses. I was there for that bout of dickbaggery and the last one during a CG that occurred for 'role playing reasons' according to that group...
