Atari 400 sound mod for UAV?

Recommended Posts

I thought this needed it's own topic, since the thread for Bryan's wonderful UAV is getting kinda long.

For Atari 400 sound, I know of only two circuits. The one from ANTIC April 1984:

and Bryan's suggested mod, (slx created the diagram):

Q1. Are there any others out there?

I've breadboarded both and they both seem to work well, and about the same. Bryan's is a lot easier and more compact, at least with through-hole components; it has fewer and smaller parts than the ANTIC mod.

The SIO sound is kinda quiet on both, though. For Byran's mod, I tried it without the 18K resistor and it didn't make any difference that I could tell.

Q2. Any ideas for boosting the SIO sound?

Q3. Any ideas what the 18K resistor is for? Protecting the MCP601 chip maybe?

Thanks,

-Joe

Here are the boards for the mod I will be selling, it's based on the design by Bryan and adds a couple of capacitors. I need to test it with a couple of different resistor values as we try and even out the audio vs the SIO tape volume.

Nice. When will these be available? Once they're ready, I'll take two of them.

Any update to this project? With the options out there for separate (S-video) boards for the 400/800, we really need an answer for pokey and cassette audio. This upgrade is very welcome to the 400 community. This in conjunction with the video upgrade allows removal of the RF cable and gets the 400 a little closer to big brother 800.

Oop! I keep forgetting about SIO audio.

I'm going to VCF Midwest, so if you're not selling them before then, I'd definitely buy one there.

LOL that was the whole point of the board, if you don't care about it you can just pick off from the pokey and disregard any additional modification. Another reason I wasn't that sure how much interest there would be, a very niche issue on a single a8 machine.

@orpheuswalking:

Is there a way I can be sure that I will be able to actually buy the two ordered AV add-ons? I'm not that much around anymore, and I do not want to miss this boat. Looks like an awesome thing to install in my 400.

So please let me know how I can finish the order. (And I can imagine more people would like to know this)
