Your Best BBS Door Game Stories!

Recommended Posts

I loved BBS door games back in the day and have tons of epic stories and would love to hear yours. I used to dial into a local BBS called "The Promised Land" in southern New Jersey to play a game called Dominions. This was a game of space conquest, a typical print out your giant star map on dot matrix paper and tape it together game. However, we had a great group of dedicated players and we loved our little political maneuvers.

My favorite tactic was quite simple. Other players could use long range sensors to detect the number of your ships defending each of your planets. I would conquer planets in close-by clusters and then shuttle my fleets back and forth between planets, so when the enemy scanned my planets they saw undefended, easy prey! However, my ships were merely in short transit between these close worlds and would arrive before any enemy could make it into the system. Their little attack fleets would be easily crushed.

This game had a surprising amount of drama built into it, particularly for long range attacks. It could take several turns to move a fleet and as a BBS door game turns were processed once an evening. I can remember sleepless nights wondering if my fleet would make it! Also, figuring out what you wanted to build each turn was also very stressful. We were kids, so no spreadsheets or elaborate tools to reverse engineer the most optimal solution. It was strategy and alliances. So much fun.

Later versions of Dominions (2.0 and above) added Radar which let you see fleet movements farther out and pretty much took a lot of the fun out of the game. The fog of war made battles much more interesting and outcomes a lot more uncertain. I am convinced Radar ruined the game by taking away the FoW.

What are your favorite BBS Door Game stories?

I remember back in the mid 90's there was a couple who did a "tag team cheat", by exploiting a bug in one of the door games. One would purposely get killed, so that the other would get all their goodies, plus the bonus in sector 01 - 01 when the next one logged in. Once I figured out how they were doing it, I started setting my modem to auto dial the BBS repeatedly at 3:00am with no delay, that way I could sneak in and steal all their booty before the other one had a chance to log in. I did this for a solid two weeks before they gave up the nefarious tactic.

Pimp Wars was one of my favorites. Always taking the opportunity to fire bomb my opponents whore houses and peeling off their "hoes" with offers to come and work on my street. before signing off for the night. I managed to tick off quite a few other "Pimps" out there with my constant theft of their hoes!

Found this thread in a Google Search. Funny - I've been running (and playing) Pimp Wars on my BBS for years!

Finally have someone firebombing my house again ;-)

I loved Trade Wars 2002! I would dial into the BBS I frequented most and play for almost my total time allotted on that board. I switched to LORD after a teacher I had a huge crush on convinced me to give it a shot. She and I played together for quite a while until that particular board closed down. *sigh* Those were fun times. I often miss those days....

Currently, I play LORD through BBSLink and have introduced some people to the wonderful world of BBSing and LORD though my BBS (The Black Sun BBS - telnet to blacksunbbs.ddns.net:23) Shameless plug - Feel free to "call" in :)

I currently run Synchronet, but I have experimented with Mystic and WWIV. I'll check out your board when I get home from work, and if you don't mind I'll set up a telgate so my users can connect to your board.

I remember there was a user on the local Joliet IL BBS's named Dragon. Well, the guy was a narcissitic jerk, and people were pretty pissed at him.

Well, he was doing pretty good at Space Empire Deluxe on, I think it was the Alcatraz BBS in said town, but so were myself, the sysop of Alcatraz, and the sysop of SAC Base ("Gen. Jack D. Ripper"). The problem was that if we each took our turns as per normal during the normal course of the day, he'd have a chance to log in and repair the damage, so we had an idea. At about 30 minutes to midnight, the SYSOP of SAC would dial in and take his turns. After he was done, I connected locally to Alcatraz and took my turns. Then the Alcatraz Sysop ("The Warden") logged in locally and took his turns. Midnight hit. I logged in locally again (turns were renwed at midnight,) The Warden logged in locally after me, and then Gen. Ripper dialed in. We crushed the twerp like the bug he was. He complained until the day he left the BBS scene that we cheated to defeat him. No cheating, playing by the rules!

Was it by chance Terry Ortmáñ? hahaha Whenever I hear of any BBS creepers from IL, that's the first name I think of.

And yes, bad enough that I'll still disguise his last name. :)

Oh man, this game was so awesome! I had this game running on my BBS.

I am totally embarassed to admit it, but when I was 14 back in the early 90s, I ran a BBS called "Stoney's Whore House BBS." I mean, let's be honest, I couldn't have possibly come up with a more innapropriate name. I didn't have porn or anything on it... but I did have a lot of "elite warez" hahah.

As I matured a little bit, I created a BBS called "Starflight BBS," named after the DOS game. That BBS lasted several years... and I met several lasting friendships from that BBS when we were younger (believe it or not) that have lasted over 20 years. These are friends that I've worked with together professionally in major corporations as an adult.

It is really amazing honestly... how "the BBS" has shaped my life. It's something I kept secret when I was in high school because... OMG.... how uncool would that be if my friends found out I BBSed? But it was a huge part of my adolescent years.

I was absolutely obsessed with this game...

Well I'm in if we can get at least 10-20 people. Otherwise it's really not all that fun with 3 or 4 people.

I currently play on a server called "BBSLink" that has quite a few players (relatively, around 10+) I use that rather than running LORD and Trade Wars on my board to give my users more players to interact with. But if enough AA members want a special section on the Black Sun BBS, I'll be happy to oblige. Just need to make sure that the AA forums are mentioned in the feedback so I can give the proper access. :)

At the moment I only have Telnet nodes available. Though I've been thinking of adding a dial up node in the future. Though I may run a dial up node on an older computer as another project.

I would dial into various BBS systems back in the day.. but I primarily used it as my early "internet" to get various software or pictures, etc. I had absolutely ZERO idea what Door Games were and I still don't even understand them to this day. ..

Almost every system I dialed into had a "Door Game".. but I would dabble in it and didn't know what the heck was expected, or what I was supposed to do, or even if I was interacting with anyone or is it a single player game, And if anyone else was playing it.. how would I know? Are they going to be waiting for me if I take a week or two to do something? etc. So I shrugged and went on to look for hosted pirated software. :P

I have no idea if a door game is just a game available when logged on, but a I remember a few we used to play.

One was wrestling game, though you didn't control the match yourself. Had rankings, don't remember too much else, other than the BBS (Underdog) was very popular and almost always busy.

Leech was another that we played. Not sure of other off the top of my head.
