wolfy62
Does anyone know why the 20 game Namco mini player is not out or advertised on the My Arcade website anymore? I sure am looking forward to it for the Rolling Thunder 1,2, and 3 as well as Xevious and Splatterhouse 1 and 2. I hope it was not cancelled for licensing reasons.

Could be that Namco has licensing with another arcade manufacturer. I bought the Data East one last year on the 'bay. Truth be told, I haven't even opened the box it came in. Namco has so many competing devices now ranging from the World's Tiniest Arcades at 4 inches to the 4 foot 1up cabs. Honestly at this point, I'd hold out for a better multi packaged game seeing as a lot of stuff is coming around the corner. Plus the My Arcade joysticks are kind of rubbish.

Yes,I have noticed Namco has been pimping out there games to everyone, please no more mini Pacmans, etc. I have been playing the Data East mini player for the last week and I really like it,even the stick. There are many games on it i have never played, that made it a lot of fun. I will keep my eyes open this year for everything new that is old and retro!

Tanooki
I don't mind them pimping out their Namco goodies because now they're getting more desperate and digging further when you see the likes of a gem like Don Doko Don and Rolling Thunder on one of those wide handhelds among some other goodies too. Taito is getting into the act too as their handheld has the family of bubble bobble games rolled into one.
Andromeda Stardust
100% impulse buy. I walked into Best Buy to look for CDs (newsflash: they have a single $5.99 clearance rack with a hodge podge of leftover CDs. Actually better vinyl selection than CD) and walked out with this in tow: Valentine's day present to myself.
Tanooki
Wow I did not know they carried those at best buy, impressive. When the SF2 one rolls around, if that showed up and I had the cash on me I'd be very tempted.

negative1
2 quick reviews. ============= The VFD ms pac man is awesome, probably the best one i've played. the graphics are crisp, the mazes change (haven't got to the junior one yet), the fruit moves, there are intermission screens. difficulty is medium to hard. i have trouble going up at times, but that's the controls... Awesome version, and great cheap price, well worth getting if you like VFD displays. ============== Never could find the basic fun galaga, so ordered it off ebay. Excellent version, love the hard pro difficulty of it. Although it takes some getting used to, people will still master this version also. i've gotten 50k after 3 plays. i hate the controls, the joystick is terrible as usual, even for just 2 directional play. overall, its worth getting if you're a galaga fun, but be warned it's a lot harder than the arcade version. later -1 Edited February 22, 2019 by negative1

negative1
Thank you for the reviews, and I am glad you found the Galaga thread and posted some awesome game tips! sure, no problem. one update on the ms pac man VFD, the joystick is on the far left, NOT in the middle which is unfortunate, because that's not very comfortable. later -

+save2600
A mini bill changer? What's next, add-on monitor for the top of Dragon's Lair? I saw Tron machines with spectator monitors sitting atop too BITD. The bill changer acting as a USB hub is really, really cool actually. Nice way to accessorize while being useful at the same time. I hope they add the proper cardboard inner bezel graphic to Asteroids for that extra touch of authenticity.

Jess Ragan
In the immortal words of Jay Sherman, "This game... sucks." Sure, he was talking about electric football, but it could just as easily apply here. Why bother making a VFD version of Galaga in 20-freaking-19? It can't possibly capture the beauty of the arcade original, and frankly, this looks bad even by the standards of this display technology. I have the previous game, Galaxian, by Coleco, and while that ain't perfect, at least they had the sense to give it a vertical aspect ratio. Here the aliens are so close to your ship you could reach out and touch them. That makes dodging their shots a little slice of impossible. Basic, yes; fun, no.
Tanooki
^^ I wish I could give you a like this for both blocks of text as it's on the nose. They're idiots, doing it at all, and doing it poorly as well. I'd take a Coleco original Galaxian over their device anytime, or any of the unlicensed ones too from about the same year. At least they had to try and make them fun as it was smaller companies appealing for fun, here it's a huge corporation shoveling crap with a license and not even bothering to try really. BrianC
Except the game uses a vertical screen (though I agree the images are too big and don't make the best use of space like Coleco's Galaxian does, though, yeah, waste of vertical screen by using a square space for the graphics), isn't VFD (it's colorized backlit LCD), and uses music from the AC version. At least they attempted the two ships and bonus rounds. I found Q*Bert, Frogger, and Ms. Pac-Man segmented versions to be quite fun and I find them more, not less impressive because of the limitations of the segmented LCD (their Pac-Man isn't too hot, though). I disagree with the sentiment that old style LCD games are out of place in 2019 and personally find it disapointing to see such a comment since these games can be fun in their own right (I'm actually liking the segmented Ms. Pac-Man better that what I played of fully animated version. No slowdown of ghosts in tunnels in the walmart one, which can be quite frustrating at times). Edited March 5, 2019 by BrianC
JBerel
Another review of the coleco handhelds: Why do the boxes say Colecovision. What the hell has that got to do with anything??
BrianC
Why do the boxes say Colecovision. What the hell has that got to do with anything?? Yeah. that is perplexing. Also, Rainbow Brite seems to be either NES emulation or NES on a chip and the other is the GBA Robotech game. I heard mixed things about the latter game, a strange choice for a single game mini cab. JBerel
From the start these things screamed cheap. They went real cheap on the licenses, and real cheap on the tiny lcd. Still, ya gotta give even these guys props for producing a plastic box with functional electronics in it. That's a lot more than most are capable of. I'm assuming these guys already had access to the original molds and they just slapped an orange pi in them.
NE146
I'm actually more impressed with the segmented LCD Galaga to be quite honest.. I mean it probably took a lot more effort and design than shoving a NOAC/GBA game in a shell.
