Mini Arcade Alert!

Think so? I have yet to see anything but the original 4 games show at any retailer around here.

After checking week after week at Walmart for other mini arcade games.

I have completely given up.

Ebay or Amazon all the way. Unless you want to wait for several months,

and even then if you are lucky.

Somehow, Pac-Man looks slightly wrong in both stretched and not stretched modes. And of course a horizontally-oriented game stretched vertically looks especially weird. I guess they couldn't find any 4:3 screens? I don't envy the people designing these... I'm sure they have to make many difficult choices and compromises. But aside from that, I am glad they're making these and hopefully they can continue to improve them.

I disagree, i think the pac-man non-stretched is close to 4:3, so its ok to me.

it doesn't impact gameplay. and they are the arcade roms, so that's the main thing.

I do want that Namco Museum 10" unit still, even though I got tired of the Data East one and am working on selling it as much there never was a huge thing for me. That said with all the info black outs, excuses, delays, I'll hold off on buying it if it ever does arrive next month, or whatever month, until I can snag a weird deal on it like I did with the DE unit. They've wasted my time and interest too much now.

here's the tiny impulse multi-game handheld, they are clear.

the controls are d-pads now, which means the games might be more playable:

there are several of them.

How the hell is NOBODY talking about the tiny Ninja Turtles Arcade Pinball machine? https://youtu.be/9A3oA57ZXTY?t=99

Not only AtariAge, but I can't find anyone, anywhere discussing it. To me, it is by far the most impressive mini arcade yet, assuming they packed PinMAME in it or similar.

interesting but too bad that video barely shows anything about them, I will be interested and keep an eye open ... having said that mini-pinball machines are notoriously victims of slow down the moment you get a multiball situation going so I'd be surprised we'd ever see a small PinMAME device of any type until you get into expensive odroid / raspberry pi territory

I suspect there's not as much talk about these because fans like me started to collect them, then realized one fundamental truth. We're old and we can't see tiny things anymore.

i'm old, but i can see with glasses.

its the terrible tiny controls that are the main problem.

i'm skipping on the pac-man credit card, even though it's probably a better control, i'm almost pac-manned out.

I totally agree with the Pac-manned out comment.

Way too many different machines out now.

At least put some different games on the new devices.

I use glasses too. I do love some of the tiny arcades and it makes a big difference.

i'm tempted to get the pac-man countercade though,

only because it has the very rare pac n pal game on it though.

I wonder why the sound is worse on the micro versions. I'm under the impression both the micros and the Tiny Arcades are on Arduino based hardware. It also looks like the Micro Arcade Tetris is different from the Arduboy based microcard Tetris. The Super Impulse Tetris reminds me of some of those old DOS based clones of Tetris.

here is my review of the tiny arcade

qbert machine

-------------------------------------

background - qbert is one of the highest

recognizable videogame characters up there

with pac-man.

i love this game also. yes, its repetitive

after round 4, and then round 9 in the

arcades. but its still challenging at

the upper levels.

there's a lot of portable versions of

this game on cartridge based ones,

and a few standalone ones.

most very pretty faithful to the gameplay

with some minor differences.

the one thing that throws people off is

the diagonal joystick movements instead

of the normal 4 directions.

its good to see this new standalone version

in a tiny format.

box and packaging

------------------

they used the standard clear case, and

there is a tiny booklet along with it.

it's pretty easy to take out, and keep

for preserving the machine if you're

done with it.

batteries are included

hardware

-----------------------------------------

this is the same tiny cabinet shape as all

the other tiny arcades.

the marquee lights up as usual.

the joystick is on the left, and does get

in the way of playing the game, but the

response is very good.

there are the usual 2 buttons to insert

a coin, and 1 to start the game.

display

--------

the display is sharp and vibrant and the

colors look good. it's best played in the

dark, as its not that bright, and probably

would be hard to see in the daytime.

it looks like the correct aspect ratio

game

------------

the gameplay is not very close to the arcade but not quite.

- qbert moves way too fast, making it easy at times

and harder to control

- the enemies do not come out at the proper times

- the enemies don't make the proper sounds

- when you jump on a disc and land on the top cube,

it DOES NOT CHANGE COLOR, this is bad, because many

times you need this to complete the board, which

totally changes the strategy

- NO EXTRA MEN? i've played it for awhile, and have

yet to get an extra man

- coily has random AI, and jumps all over the place,

and DOES NOT COME AFTER YOU, which is weird, and

totally wrong

- the arrows showing the color move much too quickly

controls

------------

the joystick is very responsive, and works good for the

diagonals.

the buttons are not used during the game

pros

--------------

very light

very small

battery is included

controls are responsive

cons

--------------

not an arcade port

way too many flaws in the gameplay

doesn't feel like qbert, but looks like it

overall

-----------------

price was $20 which is fine

ordered it online, since i can't find any of them in stores

i would rate this a 2.5 stars out of 5, or a C grade.

it's a good portable game, that looks like qbert,

but the gameplay just isn't there, and its a very

poor emulation of the game..

if you love qbert get it, but don't expect it play very well.

if you're a collector, you'll probably get it anyway.

i'm disappointed with it, and will play it a few more

times before putting it away.

looks like we'll have to wait for someone else to do it right.

It seems like the credit card sized device is the exact same game built into the micro arcade except poorer sound... :P

The audio on that pac man one is god awful and Tetris isnt so bad but ugh having the music stop shortly after playing and only leaving the low quality beeps for the sound.

did you really expect good quality sound from these cheap machines.

i wasn't.

i prefer these improved controls, and they are much more comfortable to play.

it's not like anyone is going to play on them for more than a few minutes at the most.
