SIO2PC (Serial)

Can the serial version be used to connect a modem or other RS232 device to the Atari? Is there an R handler for it? I looked around but didn't find an answer.

Looking for a relatively cheap way to add RS232 port without having to buy an 850 or PR.

Thanx

I have a PR you can have if you want it. I haven't used it in years and have a couple of 850's so I'm not going to miss it.

If you don't need speed, simple way would be MPP handler and J/S port with ~$.50 in parts. Even if the latest handler works, you wouldn't be able to go above 1200 BAUD. If you already have a SIO2PC cable, people have reported it works with the R-verter handler.

Can I hook a modem to the serial version of the SIO2PC cable sold by AtariMax?

I'm going to say yes on the basis of doing a Hayes modem with the aforementioned MPP J/S dongle. Understand that it has been decades since I did it. Not a huge problem with hook up, just the two data lines and ground need to be hooked to the modem. I can't recall if I had to set switches for no handshake lines and as is probably obvious to you, they won't be there on a SIO2PC type interface. I don't recall any problems with running no handshake lines but I didn't really crank the speed up.
