What's amazing is how, even with using limited colors, how good the backgrounds look.

Cool!!  No VRAM corruption so far.  ;)

 

You can use four invisible highest priority colored sprite to mask Syndey sinking down in the sand. Or you could overlay one or two sprites(foreground pixels) over Syndey and have it follow the character in 8 step.  I did that trick for my PONG Basketball.

I just pushed off a piled of dust and opened the PONG source code and changed the sprite color to show the effect. 

 

So far looking good.(hide a can of RAID somewhere in the game, so I can use them on the bees and the scorpions. Possible a snake charmer too. Maybe a rocket launcher if those 2 can't be put in the game.)

I used tiles for the yellow part in the flame and the red part is sprite
