Intymike
Some horror and scifi movies on tv scared me back then. Phase 4 the ant horror movie for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bcs3_b3VXSU Edited September 30, 2016 by Intymike
tep392
My sister told me about Bloody Mary, or was it Mary Worth? Anyhow, for a while I had a hard time walking into the bathroom with the lights off or getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Eric7100
Duneedon, the floating alien head from the TV series "Read All About It": Duneedon's humanly-disguised counterpart, Mayor Don Eden, was equally creepy. Interestingly, the actor who played him doesn't look too creepy at all: Edited September 30, 2016 by Eric7100

+JasonlikesINTV
I watched the movie The Changeling when I was a kid....scared the crap out of me. I was 3 yr old when the movie released, but probably at least 5-7 when I watched it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Changeling_(1980_film)
+JasonlikesINTV
I'll tell you what scared me recently, though. I saw a video of a snapping turtle in a tank during feeding time. Someone dropped in a mouse/hamster rodent and the turtle literally bit off the entire lower body of the rodent...but the upper half swam away Nightmares, I tell you! DON'T Google it! NE146
lol.. I was about to post that "Bug" movie. That was it man. Maybe this is more because where I'm from during the 70's and early 80's, but I'll tell you what else freaked me out as a kid, and that's japanese BIG EYES in their cartoons and comics. AND, Also the "mean" looking samurai that seemed to be on every friggin calendar hung at every home where I grew up (some pictures even had blood). Also the japanese cartoons were always way more scary and violent than Yogi Bear... I believe it was an episode of "Captain Harlock" 70's tv series that terrified me one day and lasted for weeks. With all that said, I have to say it was with a great sense of bemusement that I witnessed japanese manga and anime steadily grow in popularity over the decades in the the western world. Oh! One last thing.. this alien at the end of every Star Trek.

+Lathe26
I was opposite of you , I loved couldn't get enough of those Godzilla movies. Cheese and all. When there mouths were still moving after they finished the English dubbin, priceless childhood memories. Lol I loved them, too. I watched as many of these as I could back in pre-VCR days. Our local ABC TV station showed old movies of all kinds on Sunday afternoons. When I was little and a monster movie was playing, I would have to step out of the room when I became terrified. I'd tell myself it was only a movie for a minute or so (and get annoyed with myself for getting so worked up) . Then I would return to watch the rest. My young brain processed the special effects as realistic.
+nanochess
My young brain processed the special effects as realistic. That's so true for many movies I saw as a kid, I remember seeing the Time Machine as the greatest ever movie, and playing it again after 20 years I see clearly the backdrops are done in cardboard! anyway great movie
spacecadet
I swear, even in hindsight, that my family lived in a haunted house when I was a kid. I can remember a few nights hearing footsteps getting louder and louder until they were so loud I thought they were in the room with me. I remember screaming and my mother running in to comfort me. I also remember every few nights seeing this hand reaching down at me out of the darkness, directly towards my face. But it would just keep coming down and go through me and disappear. As for external things, one of my most vivid fear memories was seeing the movie "Roller Coaster" in Sensaround or whatever fad technology they used for the original release of that movie... it was incredibly loud and I think they had subwoofers under the seats or something, so the seats would rumble in the scenes with the roller coaster. I literally ran out of the theater. My mom had to run after me. I think if I was warned about the sensaround, I might have been ok. I think my mom sort of wanted to surprise me and see what my reaction would be, but as a little kid I just thought the roller coaster was actually going to come through the screen and crush us all.
onmode-ky
I can't really compete with encountering actual paranormal phenomena, but anyway. . . . If you want to check which episode of Harlock it was, the entire series is available in your current hemisphere for about $50. At some point, I plan to get that myself. For me, back in the late 80s or early 90s, I saw a traumatic episode of a super robot anime series which I have unfortunately not been able to identify all these years later. There aren't all that many super robots whose crews are kids at school, but I haven't found the one with this episode. In it, while a boy is sleeping in bed, an evil monster larva comes in through his open window and lands next to his head. It crawls into his ear and does something like biting his eye (he sits up, crying out and grabbing his face like his eye is in pain). Then, he seems to calm down and go back to sleep. The next day, he's behaving strangely at school. At one point, he's found eating reptiles and/or amphibians in the science lab (or some other room--not sure if they were class pets or to-be-dissected experiment subjects). By the end of the episode, he's turned into a giant monster, whom his super robot pilot classmates have to battle. The remnant of humanity that's still within him asks his friends to go ahead and kill him, and so they slice or stab him with the robot's sword. That episode freaked the hell out of me, and that's despite me at the time being either in the show's target age group or slightly older! The Ceti eel scene of STII:TWOK (which I probably saw a few years later) didn't even have anywhere near a comparable effect on me! Anyway, if there's anyone here who can identify the show, please tell me. The only "elementary school team of kids commands a super robot" shows that I'm aware of are Sunrise's Eldran trio, but I have not been able to determine whether one of them is where this episode came from. All I know is that it isn't in the first half of Raijin-Oh, the first Eldran show, since I have those episodes on DVD now.onmode-ky
