The RetroEngine FPGA console discussion

Recommended Posts

I saw this this morning:

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/11/mysterious_retroengine_site_goes_live_promises_support_for_nintendo_sega_atari_and_sony_systems

Looks pretty cool! Pretty solid lineup of systems emulated so far; and the article references the Mike Kennedy and the Coleco Chameleon debacle as well...

Wonder if this one will actually make it to market..

The placement of micro USB for power, HDMI for AV out, and USB slots for controllers look EXACTLY like a Raspberry Pi.

I'd buy one of those little cases, because it's cuter than the one I'm using, but I don't think they should take any credit or money if they're using EmulationStation or RetroArch, which COINCIDENTALLY JUST SO HAPPEN to support the exact same systems.

From https://retropie.org.uk/

RetroPie is a system to install/configure emulators on an existing OS – The RetroPie Setup Script is released under the GPL.

The image we provide is Raspbian Lite with RetroPie pre-installed. Much of the software included in the RetroPie image have non-commercial licences. Because of this selling a pre-installed RetroPie image is not legal – this includes “giving away” a pre-installed RetroPie with your commercial product. Including copyrighted games with RetroPie is also not allowed.

If you are selling hardware that supports RetroPie you should provide a link to our site for your customers rather than including a RetroPie image with your product.

OK, so the USB jacks are slightly different, but power and HDMI are in exactly the same spots as on a Pi.

This is a Pi.

And here is the "RetroEngine FPGA console"

....

I believe it's closer to or it simply is this one:

It certainly does look like that. In any case, this doesn't seem to be FPGA, but simple software emulation. There's nothing wrong with that, but there's nothing special or unique about it either.

On their Facebook page, someone said "stop hyping up this stupid Pi thing like it was the PlayStation 5, release some specs and details," to which they replied they would not do that for competitive reasons. Just like RetroVGS/Colecovision Chameleon!

Neat stuff! Even if it is just a Pi running EmulationStation in a cute little Genesis style shell I imagine that there would still be a sizable market for it, if they make loading your ROMs onto it a simple drag and drop affair and all the software comes preinstalled and configured for easy plug and play use. Personally the only thing that's kept me from getting a Raspberry Pi up to this point is all the setup and configuration required, since I'm not terribly technically inclined when it comes to software and getting it all up and running properly sounds like a major pain.

If the RetroEngine could take all the hassle and headache out of it and provide the customer with a simple, powerful, and easy to use Pi setup that works right out of the box then I think there would definitely be a market for it. I know I'd be interested in it. :)

I think the whole listing is misleading. Shouldn't need a kickstarter to make something like this.

Now if there was a kickstarter for a FPGA based system or this one specifically:

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/242970-fpga-based-videogame-system/

Then I'd be on board 100%.

I'd like an open source type FPGA based console that way people could develop stuff around it (video/controller adapters/software etc.)

I suppose that would open up the market for knockoffs but would prevent the hardware from going unsupported in the long haul.

Myself personally I prefer the actual hardware being modified to support the best video out possible but that is an expensive hobby.

In the best of worlds Id like to see something like the OSSC that could be scaled down to fit in any console that puts out RGB/YPBPR and apply appropriate scaling/filters to the HDMI out.

What a bunch of nonsense in that post.

They are using std emu on std off-the-shelf CPUs ..... there are no trade secrets in there, actually there's really nothing to it.

Those guys are posturing as if they are designing something new from the ground up ..... the Orange-pi-lite is a 15$ SBC folks.

The are talking about licensing deals ...... mmmmmhhhhhh that'd be the SW side ..... I wonder what games are they targeting ...... it looks like a mini MD/Genny ..... I digress!!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Looks like it's available for pre-order finally. I recently got my soft modded xbox back so my incentive to pick this up has gone down significantly for the moment. I am no way endorsing this product. Just keeping an eye on it....

If it winds up getting good reviews I may pick one up.

There's something on Facebook for some kickstarter deal to get you a RetroPie system on a Nintendo cartridge. Yet, the RPi is not included. In fact, I think it's just the cartridge shell. There's already comments on the Facebook page asking what are they bringing to the table. Heh

It's just like a RetroPie except you have to wait for them to collect money before it goes out. I literally don't see the point, except for the cute case.
